The patient, Ha Thi AT (born in 1978, residing in Binh Son district, Quang Ngai province), was brought to Da Nang Hospital by her family in a state of bone pain all over her body, unable to walk on her own, then a large clavicle tumor appeared, encroaching on the entire neck area.
Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Huong examines patient Ha Thi AT after autologous stem cell transplant.
Patient AT received chemotherapy and achieved remission and was transferred to the transplant area (absolutely sterile isolation area) at the Organ Transplant and Stem Cell Transplant Center - Da Nang Hospital to perform the transplant procedure. The transplant process went smoothly, the patient recovered quickly and is now able to live a normal life.
Previously, at the end of March 2025, Da Nang Hospital also successfully performed an autologous stem cell transplant for patient Ho Thi N. (born in 1973, residing in Quang Ngai City, Quang Ngai Province) diagnosed with stage 3 multiple myeloma. After completing chemotherapy sessions, the patient received a bone marrow transplant by doctors using a machine to separate stem cells, then infused back into the patient's body via intravenous infusion. After nearly 20 days of stem cell infusion, the patient was stable, walking normally and discharged from the hospital.
According to Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Huong, multiple myeloma is a malignant disease in the hematopoietic system, commonly found in middle-aged and elderly people. The disease progresses silently, but when detected, it is often in the late stages with symptoms such as bone pain, bone fractures, anemia, kidney failure, prolonged infections... Currently, autologous stem cell transplantation is considered one of the most effective treatments for this disease.
This is a method of taking the patient's own stem cells and transplanting them back into the patient, helping to quickly restore the patient's hematopoietic system after high-dose chemotherapy, to prevent life-threatening complications. With this method, after only 2-3 weeks, patients with multiple myeloma can be discharged from the hospital and return to normal life.
“The above successes have marked an important step forward in mastering autologous stem cell transplantation techniques at Da Nang Hospital, opening up opportunities for effective treatment for patients right in the locality, reducing the cost burden when having to transfer to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City,” emphasized Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Huong.
Previously, patients in the Central Highlands region often had to travel to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City to receive treatment using this advanced technique, which was both costly and difficult, and in many cases, they could not follow through.
However, since 2023, Da Nang Hospital has officially mastered the technique of autologous stem cell transplantation and put it into routine treatment, helping people with malignant hematological diseases such as lymphoma, myeloproliferative syndrome, multiple myeloma, leukemia, Hodgkin's disease... to be treated promptly locally.
