Oanh (Anh Dao, second from left) and Tuan (Trong Lan, right) in the movie.
Tuan's ex-wife (Trong Lan) has a new family, so baby Bap (An Nhien) - their common child - was adopted by Tuan. The life of a single father with a young daughter is not easy, especially when Tuan also has to take care of his father, Mr. Dung (NSUT Thanh Binh). Mr. Dung suffers from senile dementia, so he sometimes remembers and sometimes forgets, causing many funny and sad stories. Tuan both goes to work and takes care of his father and young daughter, making his life always chaotic, especially when his long-time maid quits her job.
Oanh (Anh Dao) is also a single mother. She has a young son named Khoai (Gia Nghia), who is a classmate of Bap. Oanh and her son have just moved to the apartment complex where Tuan's family lives. Oanh hires an hourly maid named Nga (Khanh Linh) to help her with daily housework and take care of Khoai while she goes to work. Because she works as an hourly maid, Nga also takes on the part of helping Tuan's family. Working for two families at the same time makes Nga sometimes negligent and causes many mistakes, especially in taking care of Bap and Khoai. This leads to conflicts between Tuan and Oanh. Tuan finds a new maid named Tuyet (NSUT Linh Hue). Tuyet's appearance leads to a series of other incidents that affect Tuan's and Oanh's families...
"Rainbow on the Horizon" tells the story of single fathers and mothers amidst the pressures of modern life. They have to work hard to earn a living while balancing their time to take care of their children and relatives. The film gives viewers many perspectives, including small families like Oanh's, or three-generation families like Tuan's. Each family has its own hardships, but the common point is that they are caught up in the whirlwind of career and finance to the point of having no time for each other. Therefore, gaps in relationships are formed. Oanh cannot grasp her son's fear in a new environment, and Tuan is not sensitive enough to take care of his daughter, making Bap always feel hurt. A series of problems that occur in the way fathers and mothers raise children are placed in the situations of Oanh and Tuan, showing viewers that raising children is not simply about providing material things but also sharing and accompanying children.
"Rainbow on the Horizon" also depicts family love and the loneliness of the elderly. The character of Mr. Dung, Tuan's father, with his absent-minded expression, is the voice of many parents in their twilight years: what they need is not material things, but care and listening from their children and grandchildren. The film also brings a multi-dimensional perspective on the lives of domestic workers, whose work seems simple but is full of thoughts and emotions. Through the lens of Tuyet and Nga, these are simple yet profound lessons about how to love, listen and share.
