If you are someone who is trying to lose weight and loves to have yogurt as a snack, then unhealthy yogurts can ruin your weight loss plan.
"The best yogurt for belly fat is going to be low-fat, with no added sugar or very little sugar," says Lisa Young, PhD, a registered dietitian, author of Finally Full, Finally Slim and a member of Eat This, Not That! 's health expert advisory board.
"Many yogurts contain too much added sugar, which can contribute to belly fat," notes Dr. Young.
How does low-sugar yogurt help reduce belly fat?
Eating sweetened yogurt occasionally won't cause belly fat. But eating a high-sugar diet and consuming sweetened yogurt regularly can contribute to excess fat around the stomach over time.
One way added sugar may contribute to belly fat is that sugar can be stored as fat in the body when consumed in excess.
Added sugar is much more common in our food supply than it used to be.
In fact, there has been a 25% increase in added sugars in our food supply in the 30 years since 1970, according to an article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The same article says that if your liver starts to have an excess of fructose, one of the simple sugars found in added sugar, it will eventually turn it into fat.
Eating foods high in added sugar, especially if they're also low in protein and fiber, will almost always leave you feeling hungry and less satisfied.
This can lead to snacking or eating more later, according to a report published in the journal Appetite .
