With strong winds, a wildfire quickly spread in the early morning of December 10 (local time) in Malibu (California, USA), threatening homes and businesses in an area home to many Hollywood celebrities.

Named the Franklin Fire, the blaze took just a few hours to consume everything on an area of 890 hectares, according to AFP, citing a statement from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE). As of yesterday (December 11), 1,097 hectares of Malibu had been attacked by fire.

Many properties in Malibu were destroyed by fire.

At its peak, the fire spread at an alarming rate, destroying an area the size of five American football fields every minute and at least seven structures were burned to the ground, CNN reported. Veteran actor Dick Van Dyke, 99, and his wife Arlene fled their home, according to his personal account. Actor Mark Hamill, 74, was forced to stay inside because the fire was so intense. Authorities had to knock on doors late at night to warn residents, and many streets in the city were blocked.

Malibu Mayor Doug Stewart said on December 10 that the city had gone through 20 terrible hours. Because the fire threatened Malibu City Hall, officials here had to temporarily move to the neighboring city of Calabasas to work. At a press conference yesterday morning (Vietnam time), Mr. Anthony Marrone, Director of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, continued to issue a danger warning for the entire area where the fire passed. The department has issued evacuation orders or warnings for 18,000 residents and 8,100 homes and businesses in Malibu. Fortunately, there have been no casualties.

In addition, nearly 60,000 California homes were without power, mostly in San Diego County. Pepperdine University's Malibu campus also lost power, and some buildings were running on generators.
