According to The Guardian , in some recent responses, the chatbot made controversial comments regarding an individual with a common surname in the Jewish community, using language that was deemed offensive and inconsistent with community standards.
Some comments were even negative , calling himself “MechaHitler” (a combination of the Nazi leader and a robot).
The above statements quickly caused a wave of protests in the online community and raised questions about the level of control over AI models, especially when they are integrated into a platform with a large number of users like X.
Following the user’s complaint, xAI deleted the posts and confirmed that it was adjusting its system. “We are aware of Grok’s recent posts and are actively removing inappropriate content. Since we became aware of the incident, xAI has put in place controls to prevent Grok from engaging in hate speech on X,” a company representative said.
Also according to xAI, the Grok model is trained with the goal of “truth finding,” and the company is relying on feedback from the community to improve the training process.
However, this is not the first time the Grok chatbot has caused controversy. In June, the tool repeatedly used the phrase “South African genocide.”
According to The Verge , recent changes to Grok’s operations may have indirectly led to the incident. In an update on the source code hosting platform GitHub, the development company adjusted the chatbot’s algorithm to “avoid repeating biased information” and “encourage more independent responses.”
Billionaire Elon Musk, founder of xAI and owner of X, once shared on the platform that Grok has improved significantly and can “respond more flexibly.” However, real-world incidents show that AI language models can still make mistakes, especially without the right layer of moderation.
Grok is currently used by millions of users globally, and is part of an ambition to develop applications that integrate AI with social networks, search engines and other user interaction services.
