Huynh Tan Dat (27 years old), currently a PhD student and lecturer at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Technology Sydney (Australia), not only affirms the proud image of the young Vietnamese generation on the international map, but is also always determined to build a united and strong Vietnamese student community to contribute knowledge and effort to the homeland and country wherever they are.

Recently, Dat is the representative of young overseas Vietnamese, and for the first time, a young overseas student has been elected as a member of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front. This honorable milestone further motivates the overseas student to be more motivated and determined to realize his desire to contribute to the development of the country with his own professional skills, knowledge and international network.

Affirming talent in foreign lands

Studying abroad since grade 11 out of curiosity and desire to experience a foreign learning environment, after more than 10 years of studying and working in Australia, Dat has affirmed the talent of Vietnamese international students in the international arena.

In 2020, Dat graduated from university with the maximum score, entering the Top 10 outstanding students participating in the "Honours Bachelor" program for the 2020-2021 course, majoring in economics at the University of Technology, Sydney. This is considered a transition year for students who want to conquer the doctoral level.

Dat said he registered for the "Honorary Bachelor" program with a very clear goal of striving to go straight to the doctoral program. And at first, Dat did not think he would receive a full scholarship, however, after a period of effort studying the "Honorary Bachelor" program, the international student from Ho Chi Minh City achieved the highest score. Therefore, Dat won a doctoral scholarship worth billions of dong without having to go through a master's degree.

"This is a very competitive scholarship package because each year there are only 2 scholarships for international students and there are many candidates, not only Vietnamese students but also students from other countries who want to receive it. Therefore, I am very proud and honored to achieve this result," Dat shared proudly.

Such a proud journey of studying abroad, but when asked about the most memorable milestone in the journey of more than 10 years, Dat only mentioned the moment of becoming the President of the Vietnamese Student Association at the school. Because since that moment, it has been the premise for Dat to realize his desire to build a united and strong community of Vietnamese students studying abroad to join hands and contribute to the development of his homeland and country.

According to Dat, the proudest thing is: "I have continued and strongly developed that community work journey until now. I am one of the founders of the Vietnamese Student Association in New South Wales, then founded the Vietnamese Student Association in Australia. I am honored to become an example, a source of inspiration for efforts in studying, in community work and in life for international students like me who set foot abroad to study."

Wherever you are, whatever you do, always turn towards your homeland.

Having worked with Dat for more than 4 years, Dang Dinh Hung, Permanent Vice President of the Vietnamese Student Association in Australia, who is studying for a master's degree in project management at the University of New South Wales, said that Dat is one of the typical examples of his efforts in studying, training, and active activities that Vietnamese students studying abroad can look up to and strive for more every day.

Hung said that in 2020, while the Covid-19 pandemic was still complicated, Dat, together with the former President of the Vietnamese Students' Association in Australia at that time, proactively contacted the Vietnamese Students' Associations in the states to move towards establishing a unified Student Association across Australia, contributing to creating a legitimate student organization, raising the voice of Vietnamese students to the Vietnamese diplomatic agencies in the country as well as relevant agencies in the country. In addition, Dat also used the Student Associations at all levels to find out those in difficult circumstances, needing support with necessities, medicine, or wanting to return to Vietnam during the pandemic, then through the channels of the Embassy, Consulate General, and community channels to support them.

"Mr. Dat also constantly actively researches and understands the needs of Vietnamese students in Australia, so that the Association can organize practical and meaningful activities to support them. Not only supporting activities in Australia, Mr. Dat also regularly returns to Vietnam during holidays to organize activities to connect international students in Australia with the domestic community. Bringing the hearts of the Vietnamese student community in Australia to our compatriots who are still facing difficulties in the country, demonstrating a sense of responsibility and promoting the noble tradition of helping each other of the Vietnamese people," Hung said.

Talking about activities towards his homeland, Dat affirmed that no matter where he is or what he does, he cannot forget his roots and the Vietnamese blood flowing in him so that when the country needs him, Dat and other overseas students are always ready to contribute their youth.

Promote activities to connect young Vietnamese intellectuals abroad

Not only looking towards the country with practical actions, Dat and the Vietnamese Student Association in Australia are always aware and make efforts to spread the image of a dynamic, knowledgeable, responsible and trustworthy young Vietnamese generation in the eyes of international friends. Not only that, they also proactively participate in the activities of the international student community in Australia, thereby learning good things, beauty in the culture and thinking of friends from all over the world. Dat believes that preserving national identity while being open to the progressive values of the world will help the young generation of Vietnam integrate firmly, and that deep integration will be the foundation for contributing more effectively to the development of the country in the future.

Sharing about the orientations in the coming time, Dat said that he will aim to strongly promote activities to connect young Vietnamese intellectuals abroad, especially scientists, postgraduates, and young experts, to build together a community of overseas intellectuals that is united, responsible, and capable of making substantial contributions to the country.

What Dat is most concerned about is that although the Vietnamese community and overseas students are growing in number, in many places, the connection and mutual support are still limited. That makes the collective strength not be fully promoted.

Dat also understands and sympathizes when witnessing many international students still struggling between earning a living and studying. Due to financial pressure, many students have to work too much, not having enough time and energy to improve their knowledge or develop themselves fully.

"This is a reality that makes me very concerned, because studying abroad is not only a journey of knowledge, but also an opportunity for each person to mature, rise up and contribute to the country in the future. And from those concerns, I have more motivation to contribute to building a more united international student community, supporting each other better, and spreading positive values about Vietnamese people to the world," Dat expressed.
