Touching the dream of entering a specialized school thanks to determination

At the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year, the image of a skinny, tired student sitting in a wheelchair, being taken to the exam site by ambulance by doctors and nurses moved many people. He is Vu Lam Hung, a 9th grade student at Chu Van An Secondary School, registered to take the exam for the Geography specialized class at Thai Nguyen High School for the Gifted.

Vu Lam Hung was assisted by exam invigilators, medical staff, and youth volunteers to move into the exam room.

Right at the time when the exam was about to take place, Hung had to undergo an emergency appendectomy at Thai Nguyen International Hospital. While his friends were reviewing their final knowledge, he was lying in bed, worried about the risk of not being able to take the exam and missing out on his dream of studying at a Specialized High School. Hung shared: At that time, I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to take the exam. I thought that I would try to finish the exam and then have the surgery...

Her surgery took place at the Department of Surgery, Thai Nguyen International Hospital at noon on June 3. Immediately after the surgery, despite her poor health, she still wanted to take part in the exam. Her family contacted the Departmentof Education and Training and the Examination Council of the Specialized High School to present her special wish. Recognizing her determination and considering the regulations, the relevant units promptly intervened, creating the best conditions for her to take the exam.

The examination board arranged and changed the examination room from the upper floor to the first floor for convenience of movement, medical staff were on duty at the examination site; Thai Nguyen International Hospital prepared an ambulance to pick up and drop off the student during all 4 examination sessions. This was not only technical support but also a great source of spiritual encouragement, contributing to giving the student more determination to complete this important exam.

In such special circumstances, the student's determination, the dedication of the teachers, the companionship of the doctors and nurses and his family created a touching story about humanity, the desire to learn and contribute.

Immediately after the exam ended, my family sent a letter of thanks to the Department of Education and Training, the Examination Council of Thai Nguyen Specialized High School and the International Hospital.

The letter reads: “What seemed impossible has become possible. Those feelings, care and thoughtfulness will probably forever be unforgettable impressions and the most beautiful memories for my family and especially for Vu Lam Hung.”

The exam results showed Hung's admirable efforts. He passed the Geography class with a total score far exceeding the standard score (Math 8.75; Literature 8.5; English 8.5 and a good specialized subject). This is not only a worthy reward for his personal efforts, but also a testament to the flexible, humane and regulatory-compliant handling of the relevant units.

Vu Lam Hung used to be an excellent student at Chu Van An Secondary School (formerly Thai Nguyen City) with outstanding achievements: Second prize in History and Geography at the provincial and city levels in the 2024-2025 school year; First prize in the 1st Secondary School Olympic Competition in 2025 (organized by Thai Nguyen High School for the Gifted).

Not only that, he is also an active student with artistic talent. Hung has self-taught and mastered many musical instruments such as piano, organ, guitar and bamboo flute. Music is a source of energy that helps him stay strong, especially in difficult times like this.

Hung’s story not only touched the hearts of those who witnessed it but also strongly inspired the community. It showed that extraordinary willpower can help people overcome physical limitations, circumstances and challenges.
