It took nearly 4 years for the F1 dream to become a reality, released worldwide on June 27, including Vietnam. Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski came to F1 like many other Americans: "Driving for survival". And Brad Pitt did exactly that in the movie.

The world's number one race, Formula 1, involves a complex operation that requires the coordination of many people, from technicians, team management to the drivers. And groundbreaking innovations in filming technology have allowed one of the world's biggest movie stars, Brad Pitt, to drive a real race car at 290 km/h on film.

When Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer approached him, Brad Pitt immediately agreed to star. They decided to work with Apple to make the blockbuster as close to reality as possible.
The filmmakers confirmed that the story in the film is not about a villain. It is a competition between Joshua - a younger racer (played by Damson Idris) and the older racer Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) who tries to support Joshua to drive better.
“We couldn’t have made this film without the collaboration with Formula One,” Kosinski revealed. The crew built a garage for the fictional racing team; drove on the track during Grand Prix weekends in front of hundreds of thousands of spectators; brought Formula 1 cars onto the track alongside the cars and drivers in the film…

In the spirit of Top Gun , part of F1 is about “making it real” – trying to recreate the experience of being in the driver’s seat for the audience. Seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton was involved with the film from the very beginning, telling Kosinski that he had never seen a film that truly captured the feeling of being in a race car.
"These Formula 1 cars are measured in grams. Adding 50kg of camera equipment to the car is impossible. The engineering solution was established for a year to find a way to put very small IMAX quality cameras in the race car," Kosinski revealed.
In Top Gun: Maverick , the crew installed six Sony cameras inside the cockpit of a fighter jet. In F1 , engineers put tiny cameras, about 10x10 cm in size, into race cars. Panavision also developed a remote control system that allowed director of photography Claudio Miranda to pan the cameras left and right, something they didn't have in Top Gun: Maverick .
The engineering team installed 15 camera mounts on the race car, which can hold up to four cameras at a time, helping to reduce weight and allow for realistic close-ups.
“Every time you see Brad Pitt or Damson’s face, they’re actually driving that car,” said Kosinski. “It’s a feat of engineering and organization,” Bruckheimer added.
“Hamilton smiled and said, ‘That looks fast.’ I thought, ‘Oh, thank God.’ If Lewis Hamilton says that, then we’re doing well,” Kosinski said.
" F1 needs an icon at the heart of the story. It's a big, complicated and expensive film. We needed one of the top movie stars," the director confessed.

Kosinski knew Brad Pitt loved cars. About a decade ago, Kosinski, Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt had planned to make a car movie, but it never happened. "I want to do something with Pitt," the director said.
"This is a story about a team at the bottom of the table - a team of underdogs - and Sonny Hayes in his later years getting another chance to do something he never got to do, which is win an F1 race," Kosinski added.
The crew went to the track with Hamilton and Brad Pitt was "hooked". He trained for three months before the cameras started rolling to get used to the complex requirements. Pitt and his co-stars actually drove the cars at speeds of up to 290 km/h, in front of hundreds of thousands of people.
"The happiest day was when Brad Pitt climbed out of the car and said it was over. That was the best day for me because everything was really dangerous," Bruckheimer recalled.
F1 cost more than $200 million to produce. "It's an expensive movie, but still significantly less expensive than other blockbusters. F1 is emotional, exciting, funny, hopefully the perfect summer movie," Bruckheimer said.
Variety veteran Jazz Tangcay says she's "obsessed" with F1 , with its stunning visuals, stunning sound, and breathtaking action sequences. Variety 's Clayton Davis says "The summer blockbuster is here." TheWrap says " F1 is truly top-notch. It's one of the coolest, most entertaining movies you'll ever see."
Meanwhile, Brad Pitt told reporters: "I go to the gym regularly. Then I soak in cold water to recover. I regret a little because if I had tried a little more, I would have driven at 320 km/h."
