Balloons from North Korea carrying trash to South Korean presidential office?

The South Korean Presidential Security Service has confirmed that a balloon carrying trash released by the DPRK flew to the Presidential Office complex in Seoul today, October 24.

In a statement sent to AFP, South Korea's Presidential Security Service said a balloon from North Korea exploded in mid-air and debris was found scattered around the South Korean presidential office complex early on October 24.

South Korea's Presidential Security Service added that a safety inspection confirmed the new balloons posed no danger or pollution.

This is the second time the South Korean Presidential Office in downtown Seoul, a heavily guarded and no-fly zone, has detected balloons launched from North Korea, after the first incident in July, according to AFP.

South Korea's Chosun Daily reported that the balloon carried anti-South Korean leaflets mocking South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and First Lady Kim Keon Hee. The South Korean military declined to confirm the report when asked by AFP.

There is currently no information about Pyongyang's reaction to the balloon incident.

The incident came days after Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, once again accused South Koreans of dropping anti-North Korean documents into North Korea, as well as accusing South Korea of launching drones over the capital Pyongyang.

"Seoul will have to see for themselves how dangerous their actions were and how terrible and disastrous the consequences they brought upon themselves were," Kim said.

North Korea has been launching balloons carrying trash into South Korea since May, saying the move was in retaliation for South Korean activists sending anti-Pyongyang leaflets into the north.
