That is the life of Phung Thi Hoai Thuong (26 years old, from Lam Dong ) - a girl who studied and worked in Ho Chi Minh City for 6 years. After graduating from university, Thuong worked as a sales staff at a supermarket. In February 2023, she decided to return to her hometown to live permanently.

From office worker to hometown to "carry team" of 200 pigs

Hoai Thuong once thought she would live forever with the rhythm of urban life: coffee in the morning, office at noon, and street walks in the evening. But when her sister got married, her younger brother joined the army, and her parents struggled alone in the countryside with an ever-increasing herd of pigs, she decided to quit her job and return home to help her family.

“Actually, I had just broken up with my boyfriend at that time and wanted to rest a bit. Going back to the countryside was a natural choice, not because I dreamed of leaving the city for the forest like everyone thinks,” Thuong said.

At first, she only helped with housework and gardening. But when her parents gave her nearly 200 pigs, Thuong officially started raising them.

She began learning how to carry feed, clean the pen, give injections, deliver births, and transport pigs to sell. Everything was new and traumatic for the 26-year-old girl.

“The first time I pulled a pig weighing nearly 200kg and it threw me into the pen, I just wanted to cry. But then I thought, if I don’t do it, who will?”, she recalled.

The initial job was to take care of 100 pigs, then gradually increased to nearly 300 pigs during Tet, forcing her to wake up at 5am and work continuously until dark.

Thuong said jokingly: "At first, I thought being a farmer would be easier than an office worker, but unexpectedly, I was stuck in the sun from morning to evening, sometimes so busy that I didn't even have time to eat."

Famous on TikTok for… bathing pigs and carrying bags of bran

Last Tet, while staying home alone to take care of her herd of nearly 300 pigs, Thuong filmed a few TikTok clips for fun. Unexpectedly, the videos of her smiling, pouring water and singing in the pigsty attracted hundreds of thousands, then millions of views.

“At first, I just filmed it for fun, without thinking about anything. But people said I looked cute and had positive energy, so they kept waiting for new clips,” Thuong said. The TikTok channel quickly attracted hundreds of thousands of likes, turning her into an “involuntary famous pig girl”.

But behind the happy videos is a very difficult work schedule: carrying 20 bags of bran a day, each weighing 25kg; spraying pesticides, cleaning pens, watching sows give birth, injecting pigs, and helping piglets. Even though there were times when her back hurt, her hands were swollen, and her legs were bitten by pigs, she never thought of giving up.

“When you are your own boss, even if it is a pig pen, you are responsible for each pig and each meal. Doing it for fun means losing money, doing it wrong means losing money,” she said.

Although she used to live in Ho Chi Minh City and had friends who worked in offices and had high salaries, Hoai Thuong did not feel sad. Her parents did not pay her a salary, but promised to provide her with “future insurance” - meaning that if she wanted to start her own business, the capital would always be ready. For Thuong, that was enough.

“I live in the countryside, but my parents are always by my side. I have land, savings, and food. I lack nothing. I just lack someone to help carry the bran,” she laughed.

Currently, she has not thought about expanding the business because she is afraid of not being able to handle it. Every day that passes, she chooses to live slowly, steadily and proactively with her own choices.

To young people who are still wavering between the city and the countryside, between dreams and reality, she advises: “Just try. There is no wrong choice, as long as you dare to do your best. Who knows, the simple thing you choose may be the success you need.”
