With the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution", World Environment Day 2025 launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), calls on the global community to take drastic action to address plastic waste - one of the most urgent environmental challenges today.
According to UNEP, the world produces about 430 million tons of plastic each year, most of which are single-use products, polluting the ocean and seriously affecting ecosystems and human health. In Vietnam, an estimated 1.8 million tons of plastic waste is generated each year, but only about 27% is recycled, the rest is wasteful and poses great risks to the environment.
Marine plastic pollution is becoming increasingly serious.
Faced with this situation, Vietnam has issued and implemented many important policies, programs and strategies to strengthen plastic waste management and reduce plastic pollution, typically: the Law on Environmental Protection 2020 and guiding documents with specific regulations on reducing, classifying, collecting, reusing, recycling and treating plastic waste; promoting international cooperation through the National Action Partnership Program on Plastics, enhancing scientific research, implementing public-private partnership models in plastic waste management towards a circular economy ; actively participating in negotiations on the Global Agreement to End Plastic Pollution (INC) and many other international initiatives.
The Ministry of Science and Technology has proactively promoted the dissemination of environmental protection policies and laws to officials, civil servants, public employees and workers. The message "No single-use plastic - Towards a green lifestyle" has been widely spread through many forms of modern, multi-platform communication.
Along with communication activities, the Ministry of Science and Technology continues to improve policies, support businesses in technological innovation, apply modern recycling technology... towards a circular economy.
In particular, the activities of the Ministry of Science and Technology during the Action Month for the Environment this year are closely linked to the effective implementation of the Central, National Assembly and Government's strategic resolutions such as Resolutions 57-NQ/TW, 59-NQ/TW, 66-NQ/TW and 68-NQ/TW. This is the foundation for the science and technology sector to promote its pioneering role in the fight against plastic pollution, contributing to building a green future for the country.
