Binh Dinh applies DNA technology to preserve water coconut tree genes

The Center for Information and Application of Science and Technology, Department of Science and Technology of Binh Dinh province, is conducting a research project on "Conserving the genetic resources of Nypa fruticans to restore mangrove forests, serve ecotourism and respond to climate change in Binh Dinh province".

With the aim of restoring and developing Con Chim mangrove forest - considered the green lung of the province, the Center for Information - Application of Science and Technology, Department of Science and Technology of Binh Dinh has conducted research on applying DNA technology to determine the gene code of the water coconut tree.

The research team collected nipa leaf samples from three different locations in Tuy Phuoc district for DNA analysis. "We used two genetic markers, matK and rbcL, to accurately identify the genetic characteristics of the local nipa species," said Nguyen Dai Hiep, a member of the research team.

The analysis results showed that the nipa samples in Binh Dinh had 100% similarity with the Nypa fruticans species in the international gene bank geneBank. In particular, the study also showed high genetic similarity between samples collected from three different locations in Phuoc Hoa, Phuoc Thang and Phuoc Son communes.

There is currently very little research on the genetic characteristics of the nipa palm. "We are registering to publish nipa palm DNA barcode data on GenBank. This will help us monitor nipa palm populations, detect unusual changes early and take timely protection measures," said Mr. Hiep.

The project also applies both advanced invivo and invitro seedling methods to create healthy seedlings that can adapt well to the environment. "We are perfecting the nipa seedling incubation process using advanced invivo and invitro methods. Previously, no such process had been developed and published in Vietnam," said Ms. Le Thi My Thao, project manager. The seedlings created from this process will be planted in many different locations in the Con Chim mangrove ecosystem, forming a network of nipa forests to protect the ecological environment.

As a native mangrove species in Con Chim and Thi Nai lagoon, the nipa palm plays an important role in protecting the environment and ecosystem. In Binh Dinh, this tree species is mainly distributed in the Thi Nai lagoon area and the estuaries of Phuoc Son, Phuoc Hoa, and Phuoc Thang communes of Tuy Phuoc district.

Ms. Vo Cao Thi Mong Hoai, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Binh Dinh, assessed that the conservation of nipa genes is an important step in the strategy to restore the province's mangrove ecosystem. The success of applying DNA technology in the conservation of nipa in Binh Dinh opens up the prospect of applying this method to many other rare plant species, contributing to the conservation of local biodiversity.

Nipa palm forests are not only a natural shield against climate change and erosion, but also create a diverse habitat for microorganisms, contributing to biodiversity conservation.

Nipa palm trees are opening up many opportunities for economic development. By-products from the tree can be processed into food and unique handicrafts. In particular, the nipa palm forests are also a highlight for eco-tourism development in Thi Nai lagoon.
