The HMB Endeavour is world famous as the first European ship to reach Eastern Australia and sailed around the main islands of New Zealand from 1768 to 1771. While James Cook is considered one of the most famous explorers in history, the HMB Endeavour gradually faded into obscurity, becoming a troop transport.
The HMB Endeavour was later sold in 1775. The ship was renamed the Lord Sandwich. The ship was eventually sunk off the coast of America in 1778 during the American War of Independence. After nearly 250 years of searching, the wreck of the Endeavour has been found in Newport Harbor, Rhode Island. This information was released after experts officially identified the wreck named RI 2394 as the HMB Endeavour.
Experts came to this conclusion after comparing the wreckage with blueprints of the HMB Endeavour. Through this, they discovered that the wooden beams were in the exact position of the main and foremasts of the Endeavour. Furthermore, analysis of the wood showed that the HMB Endeavour was of European origin, consistent with records of the ship being repaired in 1776, several years after the expedition.
After decades of "sleeping" underwater, the wreck of the HMB Endeavour is only about 15%. Experts are now focusing on protecting and preserving the ship. Readers are invited to watch the video : Revealing lost civilizations through archaeological remains.
