Patient TTP (71 years old, from Gia Lai ) was admitted to the hospital in a state of severe exhaustion, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, prolonged fatigue and severe weight loss. Previously, the patient was diagnosed with a benign goiter but self-treated with herbal medicine and did not have regular check-ups.
On June 11, the patient was taken to the Da Nang Oncology Hospital for examination. Imaging results showed that the malignant tumor, approximately 4cm in size, had almost completely invaded the trachea and was also closely attached to the carotid arteries on both sides, increasing the risk of life-threatening complications.
The patient was consulted by a multidisciplinary team and agreed to undergo radical surgery. After more than 2 hours of surgery, the doctors removed the entire thyroid gland and the invaded trachea (including 3 rings of cartilage) and re-established airway circulation by connecting the trachea to the neck, completely removing the invasive tissue and successfully preserving the laryngeal nerves that control the patient's voice.
After surgery, the patient was closely monitored, actively recovered and made good progress: breathing, eating, talking and walking normally after only 3 days.
Dr. Dang Nguyen Kha - Head of the General Oncology Department said: "This is a complicated case with a malignant thyroid tumor invading important organs in the neck area, which can cause respiratory failure complications, affecting the patient's life at any time. The patient is 71 years old, has poor health, and many accompanying diseases such as anemia, vestibular disorders, malnutrition and prolonged sleep disorders, making the anesthesia - resuscitation process potentially risky."
