Wirtz is set to earn £355,000 a week at Liverpool. |
Kimmich told Kicker : “The club (Bayern) needed to explain their plans. With Florian (Wirtz) not coming, Leroy (Sane) leaving and Thomas (Muller) about to leave, we felt the club needed to do something.”
Kimmich is one of Bayern's most senior players, and his public criticism of the club's transfer policy shows the "undercurrent" at the Allianz Arena. Not only Kimmich, Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke also expressed regret at Wirtz's move to England.
“It is a pity for German football that a talent like Florian Wirtz leaves the Bundesliga. I would not object if he joined Bayern,” Watzke stressed. “A talent like Wirtz staying in the Bundesliga would be very good for the league.”
According to The Athletic , the German player is expected to arrive in England this weekend and undergo a medical on June 20. Once completed, Wirtz will sign the contract and be presented to the fans. Wirtz will sign a 5-year contract with Liverpool, lasting until 2030.
Liverpool have agreed a fee of £116m with Bayer Leverkusen for Wirtz, which includes £100m up front and £16m in performance-related fees. It would be the biggest transfer in the club's history and could break the British transfer record if all bonuses are activated.
Previously, Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl admitted that the Bavarian team could not keep up with Liverpool's financial strength in the race to recruit the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder.
Eberl admitted in an interview with Sky Germany : “To be honest, I don’t know if we can pay the fee that Liverpool paid. Probably not. The club rates Wirtz very highly, he is an excellent player, but when one door closes, another opens. The club’s financial resources must be spent wisely.”
