It is no exaggeration to say that Generative AI is reshaping the entire Journalism industry, as stated by the International Media Association (INMA). In particular, Generative AI is creating a wave of profound changes in the media and journalism industry.

Big benefits

One of the most obvious benefits of AI is its ability to increase efficiency and improve workflows in newsrooms. AI tools can help summarize articles, transcribe audio or video into text, assist with SEO optimization, or filter out inappropriate, hateful, or fraudulent comments.

Around the world , many news organizations have effectively applied AI to news and article production. For example, Russmedia in Austria has integrated AI tools into its content management system (CMS) to help editors revise/shorten text, create headlines and introductions, translate, and even create articles. Newslaundry in India has used AI to help save senior developers hours and focus on the specific needs of this independent newsroom. Aftonbladet in Sweden uses AI to generate article summaries right under the introduction and they found that users who read the summaries spent more time reading the full article. Le Monde in France offers subscribers AI-generated audio versions of all articles in their mobile app. Ojo Público in Peru has used AI to create audio content for investigative pieces in indigenous languages like Quechua, Aymara, and Awajún, in addition to Spanish...

Another key benefit of AI is the ability to personalize the news experience and enhance reader engagement. For example, Ippen Digital Group and Süddeutsche Zeitung allow readers to choose how they want to read or summarize articles. RCS Mediagroup in Italy has launched a subscriber-specific in-app chat product that provides personalized answers, article summaries, and reading suggestions. Amedia in Norway has built its ALT news service based on reader preferences, creating a digital “sanctuary” where readers can discover news in a personalized way.

While personalizing content can lead to increased engagement and readership, AI is also making its way into advertising. AI tools can create personalized ad targeting segments based on the content of an article and who engages with that content, saving time and money. AI can also be used to improve customer service with chatbots. In fact, AI is proving invaluable in sifting through large amounts of data, images and text to support investigative journalism; and in fact-checking, such as AFP’s Fact Check video project that teaches the public how to verify information online.

Many challenges remain

Despite its many benefits, AI also presents significant challenges. One of the biggest concerns is the rise of misinformation and fake news, which increases the risk of inaccurate information spreading. This is particularly worrying because AI does not know what is not allowed to be written, and this lack of understanding can have serious social consequences. The issue of bias in AI systems is also a serious challenge. AI systems can reflect the biases of their creators or the data used to train them. This requires human judgment and experience to ensure fairness and accuracy, suggesting that the role of humans in newsrooms will remain important.

The relationship between newsrooms and large tech platforms is also a challenge. The market dominance of online intermediaries and the dependence of publishers on them to reach their audiences has created a power imbalance. There is evidence that Google is using data from its search activity to train AI models like Gemini. Licensing negotiations and legal challenges over copyrights of content used to train AI are ongoing issues.

To meet the challenges of using AI, newsrooms need a clear strategy. The most effective solution is for newsrooms to focus on “original journalism” rather than mass content. Original journalism includes local stories, analysis, and in-depth opinions – content that readers cannot easily find through a simple AI summary. This also opens up opportunities for creating multimedia content such as video, audio, and in-depth analysis and commentary.

In addition, newsrooms need to strategically invest in internal innovation and staff training to fully leverage the potential of AI; building a workforce that is not only proficient in the latest digital tools but also has an innovative mindset, capable of pushing the boundaries of digital journalism with AI. Developing in-house tools or customizing existing ones to suit the specific needs of the newsroom is one way forward. Additionally, newsrooms need to have measures in place to guard against misinformation, promote transparency about how AI is used, and improve media literacy among the public.

To succeed in the age of AI, newsrooms need to adopt a strategic approach that balances embracing new technology with maintaining core journalistic values, focusing on exclusive journalism, building trust, and nurturing direct relationships with readers. While the initial hype may have died down, AI remains a key area of investment and development for the future of news.
