The 1,500 m² two-storey museum displays the historical process of journalism from its inception in 1865 to the period of renovation and integration. The first floor focuses on historical periods before 1975, the second floor recreates modern journalism with many topics such as: Local journalism, journalism and islands, journalism for social security...

Pham Thi Hoan, a student of the Academy of Journalism and Communication, visited the museum on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day and shared: “Coming here, I understand the process of formation and development of the country's press, especially the period of resistance against France and America to save the country, which left the strongest impression, recreating a panoramic picture of the history of journalism through original, unique, rare documents and artifacts, marking the strong mark of journalists during the arduous resistance period...”.

500W high-power loudspeaker for propaganda on the north bank of Ben Hai River.

Among the myriad of artifacts, the loudspeaker placed on the northern bank of the Ben Hai River to fight against the other side of the border during the period 1955-1966 is considered a unique and emotional artifact. The loudspeaker is more than 2 m long, made from 3 sections, with a projection of up to 500W. This is the working tool of the journalists of Vinh Linh Radio Station, broadcasting the struggle for national reunification...

Historical witnesses recounted that the loudspeaker weighed nearly 1 ton. Every time it was used for propaganda, it was placed on a cart, with its mouth facing the South bank. When broadcast on clear, windy days, the sound could be heard dozens of kilometers away towards Gio Linh, Quang Tri . The loudspeaker's sound resounded for 21 years on the banks of Hien Luong under the rain of bombs and bullets until the day of victory, as a testament to a heroic period of radio journalism, contributing to the epic song on the banks of the border river...

Journalist Than Quang Minh, Head of the Professional Department, Vietnam Press Museum, said that there are artifacts associated with a story of the career of journalists when they go to collect news, especially during wartime. That is the parachute hammock punctured by a bomb of journalist Dang Minh Phuong, in charge of the newspaper Co Giai Phong Trung Trung Bo from 1966 - 1975, showing the boundary between life and death that war reporters had to face.

Journalist Dang Minh Phuong was born in Phu Yen . In March 1955, journalist Dang Minh Phuong gathered in the North, then was transferred to Nhan Dan newspaper. After working at Nhan Dan newspaper for 10 years, in July 1966, he was assigned to the battlefield of Zone V to be in charge of Co Giai Phong newspaper, the agency of the National Liberation Front of Central Central Vietnam. While writing an article, because he got lost, journalist Dang Minh Phuong temporarily hung a parachute hammock in the middle of the wild forest to sleep. But before he could sleep, an enemy plane dropped a bomb and the hammock the journalist was lying in was pierced by a piece of bomb at the foot, tearing a hole. Because journalist Dang Minh Phuong had the habit of sleeping with his legs curled up, he escaped death... And the hammock became a witness to the history of a time of bombs and bullets.

Other artifacts that impressed visitors were the support equipment and working conditions such as the “newspaper bunker” of Nhan Dan newspaper; the photo development room of Vietnam News Agency, the “sky horse” camera, the symbol of wartime television, etc. Notably, the news transmitter and receiver used by reporters and technicians of the Liberation News Agency to broadcast news from the battlefields to the General Office in Hanoi during the resistance war against the US to save the country.

During this period, the Vietnam News Agency supported the Liberation News Agency in the battlefield with many cadres, reporters, technicians, and equipment and became one of the strongest units of the Central Propaganda Department of the Southern Office at that time. Despite facing countless difficulties, hardships, and sacrifices, the Liberation News Agency always ensured uninterrupted information, collected news from all branches in the southern provinces, and had two-way communication with the General Office in Hanoi 24/7.

A sacred highlight at the Museum is the memorial area for martyred journalists, where the names of 511 journalists who sacrificed their lives for the revolutionary journalism cause are engraved. This is the result of nearly 20 years of diligent collecting by journalist Tran Van Hien. With a deep gratitude, he has connected forgotten memories into a part of the history of journalism.

Study and research space

Not only is it a place for exhibition, the Museum also acts as a “second lecture hall” for journalism students. The Museum has signed strategic cooperation agreements with training institutions such as the Academy of Journalism and Communication, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, etc. and welcomed more than 33,000 visitors to visit and study.

For over a year now, the Museum has been continuously collecting and digitizing documents and artifacts, including many rare artifacts such as printers from the Viet Bac resistance base, bicycles of reporters from the Cuu Quoc Newspaper, typewriters of journalist Le Chan (Vietnam News Agency)... which have been restored and displayed at the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School Relic (Thai Nguyen).

“The exhibition designers have recreated the history of Vietnamese journalism from the beginning to the present, providing a panoramic view of Vietnamese journalism in the context of international journalism. Currently, the Vietnam Journalism Museum has applied digital technology to the exhibition, the screen systems have integrated information, documents, works, and images related to the history, life, activities, and contributions of journalism through the ages. Many journalists, with their appreciation of professional memories, have become valuable bridges to bring artifacts and documents that were thought to be lost to the Museum, quietly continuing to write the history of journalism by connecting, sharing, and preserving the heritage of the profession,” said Mr. Than Quang Minh.

From typewriters, wartime cameras to modern technological artifacts, each artifact in the museum is a living witness to the development, innovation and integration of revolutionary journalism. Not only stopping at the role of preservation, the Vietnam Press Museum is becoming a bridge between the past - present - future, affirming the irreplaceable position of journalism in the cause of national development.
