Cybersecurity “Armor”: Protecting Deaf Students in Digital Space

In the era of strong technological development, cyberspace has become a door that opens many opportunities for learning, connecting and exploring for young people. However, the online world also has many potential risks such as fraud, harassment or theft of personal information - especially for children who need support in accessing information and communication, such as those in specialized schools.

When Cyber Security Becomes an Essential Life Skill

Many deaf students today are familiar with using technology to learn online, stay connected with friends or entertain themselves. However, in addition to the convenience, they are also vulnerable to risks such as unintentionally sharing personal information, being scammed on social networks or being exposed to inappropriate content.

Each question, each situation is responded to by the students with confidence and initiative – thanks to the intuitive and multi-modal training method.

Meanwhile, current cyber safetyeducation content is not really “tailored” to meet the specific learning ability of this group of students. Therefore, equipping them with a “digital skills package” that is appropriately designed, easy to understand, and easy to access is urgent to protect them on their journey to explore the online world.

Practical program specifically for hearing impaired students

Understanding that, SCG Group has cooperated with DRD Center to implement the program "Online capacity building and inspiration for hearing-impaired students" at the School for Children with Disabilities in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, on the occasion of International Children's Day 2025.

Through interactive training sessions, nearly 100 students were instructed on how to recognize common cyber risks – from managing personal data, interacting safely with strangers, to how to respond to harmful content. The content was conveyed through sign language combined with visual images and situational animations presented by the teachers themselves, making it easy for students to absorb and remember.

Relatable scenarios help deaf students easily identify online risks and learn how to respond safely.

In addition, students are encouraged to respond using interactive cards, participate in small group discussions, and summarize knowledge through vivid icons. This is not just a lesson but a real-life experience, helping students become more confident when entering the digital world .

The emotional highlight of the program was the exchange with Master Nguyen Minh Hao - an information technology expert, who was deaf in one ear since childhood and now uses a wheelchair. Mr. Hao talked about his childhood of diving in rivers to catch fish, overcoming the arduous journey to school and not giving up on his dream even though many times he thought he would have to put it aside.

The story of overcoming difficulties of speaker Nguyen Minh Hao gives confidence to disabled students: Every dream deserves to be given wings.

From a poor student in Kien Giang , Mr. Hao has worked hard to study, received a full scholarship, completed a Master's program and is currently researching AI applications to support people with disabilities. His story is a clear testament to the truth: every dream deserves to be given wings and technology - if approached properly - can absolutely be the tool that opens the door to the future.

17-year journey of non-stop for inclusive education

This year’s training program marks the 17th year that SCG has accompanied the School for Disabled Children in Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province in its mission for equal education. From supporting facilities to life skills activities and career orientation, SCG has continuously strived to help children develop comprehensively – physically, mentally and in terms of their future careers.

When empowered and given the right access, every student can confidently step into the digital world – and reach for their dreams.

Mr. Praween Wirotpan, Deputy Country Director of SCG in Vietnam, shared: “We believe that reducing social inequality must start from education. When children with disabilities are given opportunities and proper support, they can fully reach out and contribute to society. This is also the focus of the ESG 4 Plus sustainable development strategy that SCG is pursuing – especially the goal of Reducing Inequality and the orientation of Inclusive Green Growth”.

Going beyond cyber safety training, SCG Group, in collaboration with the Disability and Development Center (DRD), is gradually expanding career guidance and life skills training for students with disabilities. Through practical programs, children are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to proactively shape their own future, regardless of physical barriers. More valuable than knowledge “shields” is the confidence and aspiration that is awakened in each child. That is the foundation for an inclusive society where no child is left behind.
