The inauguration comes just a year before the country's parliamentary elections, and Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hopes the event will impress potential voters.

Earlier in the morning, Mr Modi held prayers outside the complex attended by top ministers. He later lit a traditional lamp inside the parliament building.

The new parliament building is the centrepiece of a $2.4 billion project that aims to erase British colonial features and build homes with a national identity.

The new parliament complex is located directly opposite the old building, a circular design built by British architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker in 1927, two decades before India gained independence. The old parliament building will be converted into a museum.

In addition to modern technology, the new parliament building has a total of 1,272 seats in two chambers, nearly 500 more than the old building, with three times more space.
