“600 square kilometers of the Kherson region are underwater, of which 32% is on the right bank and 68% is on the left bank,” Oleksandr Prokudin, governor of the Kherson region, said on social media.

“The average flood level is 5.61 meters,” said Oleksandr Prokudin, adding that “despite the danger and heavy Russian shelling, evacuation from flooded areas continues.”

Floods from the Kakhovka dam breach submerged many houses in Kherson.

According to Mr. Oleksandr Prokudin, the situation in the areas controlled by Russia is also "very difficult".

Ukraine's state emergencies service said 1,995 people had been evacuated from flooded areas, including 103 children. On the Ukrainian-controlled side of the Dnipro River, "a total of 20 settlements and 2,629 houses" were flooded.

Floods have submerged many areas of the capital Kherson.

Meanwhile, Russia's state news agency TASS cited security sources as saying on June 8 that about 14,000 houses had been flooded since the Kakhovka dam broke, with about 4,300 people evacuated.

According to TASS , the rising water level in some areas of the southern Kherson region is said to have peaked and is expected to continue for 3 to 10 days after the Nova Kakhovka dam was destroyed.

On June 8, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the southern Kherson region hit by floods. He discussed with local authorities " the evacuation of residents from flood-prone areas and providing life support to flooded areas."

The Kakhovka hydroelectric dam on the Dnipro River in the Russian-controlled Kherson region was partially destroyed on June 6, sending a torrent of water downstream. Ukraine accused Russia of blowing up the Kakhovka dam, while the Kremlin said Ukraine sabotaged the dam.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has commented for the first time on the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam in the Kherson region, calling it an act of “barbarism”. He accused Ukraine and its Western backers of recklessly embarking on a dangerous path of escalation.
