People across the country are enjoying a four-day holiday to celebrate National Day on September 2. A long holiday is always a time that many people look forward to after stressful working days, an ideal opportunity to travel , visit family or have fun with friends.

However, according to Dr. Kieu Xuan Thy, Deputy Head of Facility 3 - University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, changes in living environment, living habits and diet can potentially pose many risks to health.

Unstable weather increases the risk of infectious diseases, flu or underlying disease outbreaks.

The doctor gave advice for people to prepare carefully and stay healthy.

Eat scientifically to protect the digestive system and cardiovascular system

On long trips, irregular eating habits or overuse of fast, convenient but unsafe foods can easily lead to digestive disorders, food poisoning or increased blood fat.

Dr. Thy emphasized the importance of breakfast, considering it a necessary source of energy to maintain health, especially for the elderly and diabetics.

The principle of “eating cooked food and drinking boiled water” must be strictly followed, absolutely avoiding raw or undercooked dishes or seafood of unknown origin. Green vegetables and fresh fruits should be regularly supplemented to provide vitamins, fiber and increase resistance.

Drinking enough water every day, about 1.5 to 2 liters, more if traveling outdoors in hot weather, is also an effective way to keep your body healthy.

In addition, preparing healthy snacks such as nuts, dried fruit or whole wheat bread will help maintain energy during long trips.

People with underlying medical conditions: Groups that need special vigilance

People with high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, asthma, liver and kidney disease or lipid disorders are often sensitive to environmental changes. Therefore, this group needs to fully prepare their medications, medical records as well as maintain the correct dose and time.

Basic medical records such as recent prescriptions, health insurance cards and doctor's phone numbers should also be prepared in case of need.

In addition, the diet must also be adjusted according to each disease. People with high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease should eat a low-salt diet, avoid alcohol and do not overexert themselves. Diabetics need to divide their meals into smaller portions, limit starch and sweets, and always carry small candies to prevent hypoglycemia. People with bronchial asthma should carry an inhaler and avoid dust and smoke. People with liver and stomach diseases should avoid alcohol, spicy and sour foods and foods high in fat.

If unusual symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, high fever or frequent diarrhea appear, the patient should go to the nearest medical facility and absolutely do not arbitrarily increase the dose or use strange drugs.

Exercise properly during the holidays

Vacations often involve outdoor activities such as mountain climbing, swimming or hiking. To ensure safety, Dr. Thy advises people to maintain a moderate level of exercise and avoid overexertion, especially for people with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

Every day, people can do light exercise or walk for 20-30 minutes to increase blood circulation. When traveling long distances, you should stand up or move your arms and legs every 1-2 hours to prevent deep vein thrombosis.

Adequate sleep is also essential, as this is a factor that helps the body recover and strengthen resistance.

Seasonal infectious disease prevention

According to Dr. Thy, erratic weather creates favorable conditions for many infectious diseases.

Flu, sore throat, and pneumonia are common respiratory diseases that can be prevented by keeping the body warm, avoiding sudden temperature changes, and wearing a mask in crowded places.

In addition, people also need to prevent mosquito bites, sleep under mosquito nets and remove stagnant water around the house to limit dengue fever and hand, foot and mouth disease.

The habit of washing hands regularly, especially before eating and after using the toilet, also plays an important role in disease prevention.

Prepare medicine bag and medical supplies

A compact but complete medicine bag will be a “companion” on the trip. According to Dr. Thy, every family should prepare basic medicines such as paracetamol, oresol, berberine, anti-allergy medicine and mild pain relievers. If the patient has an underlying disease, they should also bring enough prescription medicine.

Additionally, thermometers, bandages, antiseptic solutions, masks, and hand sanitizers are also essential. For long trips, motion sickness pills, rehydration tablets, sunglasses, and sunscreen are also essential.
