21/34 people hospitalized after party in Hue, suspected of food poisoning

On the morning of July 21, Mr. Tran Kiem Hao, Director of the Department of Health of Hue City confirmed that the health sector is coordinating the investigation of the food poisoning incident that occurred in Phong Dinh Ward, Hue City, causing 21 people to be hospitalized.

According to a quick report from the Department of Health, from 10am to 12pm on July 19, the family of Ms. Le Thi Truong (residing in Trung Co Me residential group, Phong Dinh ward) held an opening party with the participation of 34 people. The party was served by the business household Le Thi Xuan, which has a food safety and hygiene certificate. The dishes included: seafood salad, roast chicken, sticky rice, shredded goat, steamed squid, grouper hotpot and Vinamilk yogurt.

At 6 p.m. the same day, Ms. Truong's family continued to eat the leftover seafood salad and grouper hotpot from lunch. At around 1 a.m. on July 20, 5 family members showed symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting and were taken to Hue Central Hospital, branch 2, for treatment. As of 8 a.m. on July 21, a total of 21 people had been hospitalized, including 1 case being monitored in the Emergency Resuscitation Department.

Currently, all patients are in stable health.

The Department of Health coordinated with the hospital to actively treat the patient, at the same time took 5 samples for testing, organized a field investigation and collected some remaining food samples such as squid, shrimp, cobia, and jellyfish.

Mr. Tran Kiem Hao said: "We are coordinating with Hue Central Hospital, branch 2, to investigate the progression of the cases, and at the same time send food samples to Nha Trang Pasteur Institute for testing to clarify the cause of food poisoning."

Phong Dien Medical Center is also required to coordinate with the People's Committee and Phong Dinh Ward Health Station to monitor, investigate, update the situation and promptly report to the Department of Health. While waiting for the investigation results, Le Thi Xuan business household must temporarily suspend operations, preserve remaining food ingredients and cooperate with authorities in the process of verifying the incident.
