16 people suspected of being electrocuted to death in Indian factory

At least 16 people died and six were injured in a sewage treatment plant in Uttarakhand state, suspected of being electrocuted.

Dhan Singh Rawat, the health minister of the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, said a security guard was electrocuted at around 11:30 a.m. today while on duty at a sewage treatment plant in Chamoli district. As locals gathered there, they touched the electrified metal fence and were also electrocuted.

Officials said the 16 people killed included a police officer and three members of the civil defense force. The militiamen died while trying to save the police officer who was electrocuted.

The injured are being treated in hospital. State Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered an investigation into the incident and expressed condolences to the family.

"The circumstances leading to the tragedy will be known only after a detailed investigation. However, it appears to be an accident due to electrocution," said Himanshu Khurana, Chamoli district magistrate.

The wastewater treatment plant where the incident occurred is part of the Indian government 's program to conserve the Ganges River.
