100% of hospitals have covered medical examination and treatment with chip-embedded ID cards

VHO - From June 1, 2025, people nationwide are no longer required to carry a paper health insurance card when going for medical examination and treatment under health insurance. Instead, with just a chip-embedded citizen identification card (CCCD) or digital applications such as VNeID, VssID, patients can complete the procedure and be fully guaranteed health insurance benefits.

Nationwide application

According to Vietnam Social Security, up to now, 100% of hospitals and medical examination and treatment facilities nationwide have connected and deployed the acceptance of chip-embedded ID cards to replace paper health insurance cards.

This means that at any hospital, medical center or clinic that has a health insurance contract with Vietnam Social Security, people can present their ID card to look up information online, without worrying about forgetting or losing their paper card.

In addition to public medical facilities, the private health system has also simultaneously deployed the use of chip-embedded ID cards in receiving and paying health insurance.

Major hospitals such as Hong Ngoc, Thu Cuc, Vinmec, Tam Anh... are all on the list of facilities that have signed contracts with the Social Insurance Agency, so they apply the same as the public sector. Patients coming here only need to bring their ID card or open a VNeID/VssID to enjoy full health insurance benefits.

This not only facilitates people when going to private hospitals for health insurance examinations, but also shows the comprehensive coverage of chip-embedded ID cards in the health system.

However, some service clinics or small private hospitals that have not signed a health insurance contract will not be required to use the CCCD as an identification document to identify patients.

Convenient for people

Using a chip-embedded ID card when examining a patient brings many benefits:

Reduce paperwork: People only need to bring their ID card, not have to keep a paper health insurance card that is easily damaged or lost.

Quick procedure: CCCD scanning is an automatic system that displays information, shortening the procedure time.

Synchronized data: Connecting the healthcare and insurance sectors helps ensure benefits and limit errors.

People can also use VNeID or VssID to present their electronic health insurance card. In case it is not integrated, the hospital still supports searching on the system.

With 100% of health insurance facilities nationwide implementing medical examination and treatment using chip-embedded ID cards, Vietnam has taken an important step forward in reforming administrative procedures, moving towards digital healthcare.

This is a step to help people have more convenient health care, while improving the management efficiency of the health and social insurance sectors.
