Connecting the island to the mainland

For many days now, every afternoon, it has not been difficult to see dozens of people eagerly gathering at the two feet of Dai Ngai 2 Bridge to admire the "dream" project of the past decades.

Located in the downstream of Hau River, facing the East Sea, Dai Ngai 2 Bridge project crosses Tran De estuary, connecting Cu Lao Dung with the mainland on Nam Song Hau National Highway (on the Can Tho City side). The project has a total investment of nearly 4,000 billion VND, of which the bridge is more than 860m long, 17.5m wide and the approach road is about 5km long. Started in December 2023, the project was completed after 20 months of urgent construction.

Mr. Tran Van Lau, Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee, shared: Dai Ngai 2 Bridge and Dai Ngai 1 Bridge will help clear the entire National Highway 60, forming a coastal axis connecting Ho Chi Minh City with the coastal provinces of the Mekong Delta, shortening about 80km compared to National Highway 1. From there, it will create favorable conditions for attracting investment in coastal industrial zones and clusters and along the Hau River, contributing to promoting socio -economic development, creating jobs and livelihoods for people, ensuring national security and defense in the region. Particularly for Can Tho City, the Dai Ngai Bridge project will help break the isolation of Cu Lao Dung, an area oriented to develop mainly in tourism combined with urban, trade, services and green agriculture. This is a key tourist area in the future, with the vision of becoming a high-class resort, a livable place for people inside and outside the city.

Untangling the Rach Mieu "bottleneck"

When the last concrete blocks were joined together, connecting the two banks of the Tien River, joy and emotion welled up in the hearts of the people of Vinh Long, Dong Thap , an area that for years had suffered from traffic jams, delays, and waiting at the "bottleneck" of Rach Mieu Bridge.

The dream of a modern road and bridge system spanning the major rivers of the West, once considered a luxury, is now gradually becoming a reality. Rach Mieu 2 Bridge, after many years of expectation, has been completed ahead of schedule, becoming a new symbol of the determination to develop infrastructure in the Mekong Delta.

According to Mr. Vo Tan Loi, Chairman of the Durian Association of Dong Thap Province, the new bridge will make it easier to transport fruits and seafood from the West to Ho Chi Minh City, reduce logistics time and costs, and create conditions for the development of the processing industry and logistics services, which are currently the weakest links. Not only agricultural products, the tourism industry is also eager for this boost. Garden tours, riverside homestays, and traditional craft villages are gradually reviving after the Covid-19 pandemic, thanks to more convenient transportation and tourists being less hesitant about traffic jams.

Mr. Nguyen The Hong Trung, Director of the Department of Construction of Dong Thap province, affirmed: The new bridge will be put into operation to distribute traffic between the two bridges, significantly reduce pressure and improve the capacity of the route. This is a drastic step in the infrastructure development strategy of the Southern region. Not only is it a key traffic project, Rach Mieu 2 Bridge is also expected to be a strategic boost for the development of the Mekong Delta region, helping to connect trade, improve transport capacity, tourism and unleash economic and social potential that has long been compressed by infrastructure bottlenecks.

It can be seen that Rach Mieu 2 Bridge and Dai Ngai 2 Bridge are clear symbols of the transformation of the Mekong Delta in the strategy of developing transport infrastructure. These are projects that contribute to eliminating the "lowland" of transport infrastructure, extending the dream and belief in a Mekong Delta region that constantly strives to develop sustainably with the whole country.
