Overcoming all difficulties, Russia-Cuba relations continue to expand

On June 14, Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero, and the two sides affirmed that they will increasingly promote bilateral cooperation.

During the talks, President Putin affirmed that the relationship between Russia and Cuba is still developing despite difficulties. Accordingly, bilateral cooperation will expand in many areas, including energy and tourism .

“Although the Cuban people have been affected by sanctions for decades, they are coping with them,” the Russian leader said. “We will do our best to ensure that our economic cooperation will help overcome the difficulties you face.”

For his part, Prime Minister Marrero shared that the implementation of bilateral cooperation projects is underway: “We are very pleased with the progress in bilateral relations. Trade and economic relations are being raised to the same level as political relations.”

The talks took place within the framework of the Cuban Prime Minister's official visit to the Russian Federation from June 6-17. According to Mr. Marrero, this visit will contribute to "expanding and strengthening bilateral cooperation, which has been continuously maintained since 1960".

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov and his Cuban counterpart Gerardo Penalver Portal had a discussion on June 5.

According to the ministry's announcement, the parties expressed "willingness to move forward together on the path of building a multipolar world based on equality and mutual respect, as well as strictly adhering to the norms and principles of international law."

The diplomats also discussed priority issues on the bilateral agenda, as well as key issues on the international and regional agenda, and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening Russian-Cuba cooperation in various areas in the spirit of strategic partnership.
