Vietnam - Panama towards 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations

On August 20 (local time), in Panama City, Vietnamese Ambassador to Mexico and Panama Nguyen Van Hai presented the credentials of President Luong Cuong to Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino Quintero. At the ceremony, the two sides agreed to launch a series of activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vietnam-Panama diplomatic relations (August 28, 1975 - August 28, 2025), aiming to strengthen understanding, friendship and expand cooperation in many fields.

Speaking at the meeting, President José Raúl Mulino congratulated Ambassador Nguyen Van Hai on his new assignment and expressed his belief that the Ambassador will actively contribute to bringing the Vietnam-Panama friendship and cooperation to new heights.

The President highly appreciated the socio -economic development achievements that Vietnam has made in recent years, considering this a foundation for the two sides to promote substantive cooperation, especially in the fields of economics, trade, logistics, maritime and coordination at international forums.

Ambassador Nguyen Van Hai expressed his honor to be assigned the important responsibility and affirmed that he will do his best to promote the bilateral relationship to become deeper, more effective and more substantive. Earlier, the Ambassador presented a copy of his credentials to Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez.

On this occasion, the two sides also agreed to coordinate in organizing a series of activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Panama in Hanoi and Panama City. The planned activities include: photo exhibitions, seminars, cultural and artistic exchange programs, business connections... Thereby contributing to strengthening understanding, enhancing solidarity and expanding cooperation between the two countries.

On the same day, August 20, the Vietnamese Embassy in Mexico and Panama, in coordination with the Panamanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, organized a ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The event was attended by Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez, along with many leaders of ministries, diplomatic corps of other countries, and the Vietnamese community in Panama.

Speaking at the ceremony, Foreign Minister Javier Martínez emphasized the historical significance of the 50-year journey of Vietnam-Panama relations, considering this an opportunity for both sides to review the achievements of cooperation and open up new directions for a more sustainable and effective future. He highly appreciated Vietnam's remarkable development achievements in nearly 40 years of Doi Moi, expressing his belief that Vietnam will continue to play an important role in Asia and in the international arena.

Minister Javier Martínez affirmed that with the strategic location of the Panama Canal and its role as a global logistics center, Panama wishes to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam in the fields of economy, transportation, and logistics. He thanked Vietnam for being the first country in the world to sign the Protocol on the Permanent Neutralization of the Panama Canal, and said that the Panamanian Government is promoting President José Raúl Mulino's visit to Vietnam to promote comprehensive cooperation.

Reviewing the cooperation journey, Ambassador Nguyen Van Hai emphasized that Panama was one of the first Latin American countries to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam after the country's reunification. Vietnam always appreciates the valuable support of the Panamanian people for the past national liberation as well as the current national development process.

The relationship between the two countries has achieved many positive results in the fields of politics - diplomacy, economy - trade, cultural exchange, and close coordination at international forums. Ambassador Nguyen Van Hai emphasized that Vietnam and Panama have great potential to complement each other, especially in economics, logistics, maritime transport, finance, agriculture, renewable energy and tourism. With its strategic location, Panama can become a gateway for Vietnamese goods to access the Americas, while Vietnam can be a bridge for Panama to expand into the ASEAN market.

To fully exploit the potential, Ambassador Nguyen Van Hai proposed that the two sides increase delegation exchanges, sign key cooperation agreements, promote trade and investment cooperation, expand cooperation in education, training, culture, tourism and closely coordinate at international forums to protect international law, promote multilateralism and effectively respond to global challenges.

The Ambassador expressed his belief that with the political determination of the leaders of the two countries and the close affection of the people of the two nations, the Vietnam - Panama relationship will continue to develop strongly, bringing practical benefits to both sides, while contributing to peace, stability and common prosperity of the region as well as the world.

Within the framework of the celebration, guests attended the Vietnamese culinary space, enjoyed traditional dishes, and visited a photo exhibition introducing the country and people of Vietnam and the development of the Vietnam - Panama friendship over the past 50 years.
