The convenience of the habit of keeping the phone right next to the bed is undeniable. It makes it more convenient for us to charge the phone at the end of the day, as well as update and handle the new day's work faster after waking up. However, according to health experts, this habit is absolutely not recommended.

There are many reasons why you should consider placing your smartphone next to your bed.

On the Health page, Professor Mark Gurarie, who teaches at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at George Washington University (USA), said there are many reasons why you should consider placing your smartphone next to your bed.

Specifically, keeping your phone on your nightstand can disrupt our natural sleep cycle. The light from your phone's screen could be the reason why you have trouble falling asleep.

Several studies have shown that the blue light emitted from cell phone screens can suppress the production of melatonin, the hormone that makes us sleepy. Normally, melatonin levels increase before bedtime, but blue light suppresses this process.

"As a result, it will be harder for you to fall asleep because your body is no longer as sleepy as usual," Professor Gurarie said.

A review published in 2018 also found that using a phone within 1-2 hours before bedtime negatively impacts the body's natural sleep process, especially in children.

In addition, expert Gurarie also added that the risk of fire or burns from charging your phone overnight right next to your bed is another reason you should consider.

Although rare, there is a risk of a phone battery exploding while charging, said Mr. Gurarie. And the consequences could be significant if the explosion happened right next to our heads.
