Responding to World Oceans Day (June 8) 2025 with the theme "The miraculous ocean preserves the source of life for humanity", members of the Green Fisheries Association under the Farmers' Association of Thuan Phuoc Ward (Hai Chau District) participated in collecting trash on the Han River. The association was established in 2023, including owners of 12 fishing boats under 12m in length, aiming to mobilize fishermen to join hands to protect the environment, marine ecosystems and aquatic resources. The association organized many campaigns to collect trash on the Han River, clean up and collect trash washed ashore along the landscape floor east of Nhu Nguyet Street. At the same time, mobilize members to collect and bring plastic waste, recyclable waste to shore, not to litter and not to throw nets into the sea... Head of Thuan Phuoc Green Fisheries Association Le Hai said: "Through the process of operation up to now, the number of participating ships has increased to 15, the number of members has increased to 30. Every quarter, the association organizes activities to clean the marine environment or Han River. In addition, it participates in cleaning activities launched by local units. The activities of the Green Fisheries Association have received attention from the Party Committee and People's Committee of Thuan Phuoc Ward and have supported tools for collecting and collecting waste on the water surface and riverbanks; at the same time, this is considered an effective and widespread model of mass mobilization.

Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Hai Chau District Nguyen Van Thanh shared that the Green Fisheries Association of Thuan Phuoc Ward with fishing boats and fishermen both catches seafood inshore and protects the environment and marine ecosystem. This is a new and effective model of operation. Recently, many fishing boat owners and fishermen in localities have been propagandized, mobilized, guided and initially consciously limited littering into the sea during fishing at sea. Thereby, actively collecting and bringing plastic waste, recycling with plastic, metal, nylon components to shore, submitting to the Management Board of Tho Quang fishing port and wharf for confirmation, complete documents for leaving the port, going out to sea to exploit seafood. Many fishing families actively participate in environmental protection activities, green living, limiting waste from the mainland to the sea...

In addition to propaganda and guidance on protecting the marine environment, the City Farmers' Association coordinated with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Son Tra district to support 300 fishing boat owners to implement a model of bringing garbage ashore, reducing plastic waste at sea, including supporting 600 mesh bags for fishermen to collect and store plastic waste and recyclable waste during the process of catching seafood. The Association trained on techniques for processing organic waste at home to grow vegetables, tubers and fruits in urban spaces to add green color and spread a green lifestyle. The City Farmers' Association organized propaganda and mobilized fishermen in Thanh Khe district to change the habit of throwing garbage into the sea, join hands to protect the environment and marine ecosystems and supported mesh bags for plastic waste and recyclable waste, long-handled nets to collect garbage on the water surface for 113 fishermen (boat owners) in Thanh Khe district. Fisherman Tran Van Minh (Thanh Khe district) said: “While fishing at sea, we see a lot of plastic waste. A lot of trash in the sea affects the livelihoods and fishing activities of fishermen. Therefore, I and many fishermen are actively collecting plastic waste at sea to bring it ashore and join hands to preserve the marine environment.”

Vice Chairman of the City Farmers' Association Nguyen Van An said that the City Association organized many training sessions, instructing fishermen to classify garbage on boats, bring garbage to shore... to raise fishermen's awareness in protecting resources, environment, marine ecosystems, actively contributing to sustainable development. Fishermen were raised awareness of the harmful effects of ocean plastic waste and called on fishermen to join hands to bring plastic waste to shore, including fishing nets which are also a type of plastic waste, to protect the marine environment and the health of people as well as living creatures.

Ocean plastic waste directly affects marine life

Dr. Kieu Thi Kinh, lecturer at the University of Education (University of Danang ), said that when ocean plastic waste decomposes, microplastics pollute the marine environment and the seabed, directly affecting the lives of marine creatures, weakening the marine ecosystem and affecting human life. Many marine creatures eat, swallow plastic pieces or get entangled in plastic materials, at least being injured, losing or limiting the ability to function of a part of the body, at worst affecting reproductive, digestive, respiratory functions, and dying... Therefore, fishermen need to join hands to collect plastic waste at sea, not littering indiscriminately into the sea during fishing, but bringing garbage back to shore, especially nets, to preserve the marine ecosystem.
