U23 Vietnam faced U23 Iraq in the quarter-finals of the 2024 AFC U23 Championship as the underdogs. Coach Hoang Anh Tuan did not hesitate to let his players play proactively from the start. The players in red played high pressing and when they had the ball, they actively pushed the opponent to the back of the field. This caused U23 Iraq to face quite a few difficulties.
In the second half, the turning point came in the 59th minute. The U23 Vietnam defense let Nihad Mohammed pass in the penalty area, and Van Chuan's attempt to stop Nihad Mohammed led to a foul and a penalty. Van Chuan still guessed the right direction in the 11m kick but Ali Jasim still scored.
After that, U23 Vietnam had to push up to find a goal and that made Van Chuan's goal face many challenges. Only luck helped U23 Vietnam not concede a second goal.
U23 Vietnam ended the match with only 10 men when Manh Hung received a red card in the 90th minute. With this result, coach Hoang Anh Tuan and his team said goodbye to the 2024 U23 Asia in the quarter-finals.
