The Southeast Asian Football Federation (AFF) has recently decided to apply video assistant referee (VAR) technology in the semi-finals and finals of the 2025 ASEAN Women's Football Championship - ASEAN Women's Cup, marking the first time VAR has appeared in a regional women's football tournament.
According to AFF, the implementation of VAR aims to increase fairness, transparency and support referees in making more accurate decisions in key situations, thereby improving the professional quality and image of women's football in Southeast Asia.
This morning, August 14, VIO coordinators appointed by AFF were present in Hai Phong to survey and install equipment for the matches.
Vietnam women's team has an advantage when VAR is applied
In the semi-finals taking place on August 16, the Vietnamese women's team will face U23 Australia in the second semi-final at 8 p.m. The first semi-final will be between Myanmar and Thailand.
Of the four teams, the Vietnamese women's team benefits the most from playing at home and has had matches with VAR at the Women's World Cup.
This decision by AFF is considered an important step forward for regional women's football in approaching international organizational standards.
