The US swimming team is reportedly still recovering from an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis that has affected the health and fitness of several athletes ahead of the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.

According to Reuters, the epidemic that originated from the US team's training camp in Phuket (Thailand) caused many athletes to suffer from fatigue, diarrhea and severe loss of strength.

A series of key names such as Torri Huske (18 years old) and Claire Weinstein (18 years old) withdrew from individual competitions because they had not yet recovered. Luka Mijatovic (16 years old) although participated in the men's 400m freestyle qualifying round, his performance was nearly 15 seconds slower than his previous personal record.

The Guardian quoted Nikki Warner, a spokesperson for USA Swimming, as telling reporters that all team members had arrived in Singapore, but declined to disclose the number of people affected by the epidemic.

The withdrawal of several American athletes has created a favorable opportunity for the Australian swimming team to win the first gold medals in the 4x100m freestyle relay event.

The pandemic has dealt a heavy blow to the US team’s gold medal ambitions at this year’s tournament. However, the medical team is actively supporting to ensure the athletes’ physical fitness for the next events.

The 2025 World Aquatics Championships are a crucial event for the U.S. team, as they look to bounce back from a disappointing showing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where the Americans won just eight gold medals (the fewest since 1988). The swimming event officially begins on the evening of July 27.
