Paiva's sacking leaves many questions about Botafogo's direction. |
On the morning of June 30, Botafogo announced the dismissal of coach Renato Paiva. "Botafogo Club announces that Mr. Paiva is no longer the head coach of the first team. The club thanks Paiva and his assistants for the efforts they have brought to the club in recent months - in particular the historic victory over Paris Saint-Germain at the Club World Cup and the achievements in the Libertadores and Copa do Brasil," the Brazilian club's announcement read.
This decision shocked many people, because just on June 19, coach Renato Paiva was considered a hero, when he created a big shock by helping Botafogo defeat Paris Saint-Germain 1-0, thereby helping the club pass the group stage of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™.
However, less than two weeks later, he was sacked following a 1-0 defeat to Palmeiras in the round of 16. Globo revealed that the club's owner, John Textor, and the board viewed coach Renato Paiva as the main reason for the bitter defeat to Palmeiras.
The defeat to their domestic rivals at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup was considered by Botafogo's board as an "unacceptable" result. Ole commented: "From beating PSG to being sacked in just 10 days. Football is cruel! Paiva did the unthinkable against PSG, but Botafogo did not give him a chance."
The decision to sack Paiva was also controversial. Some felt that Botafogo’s board had been too hasty. However, the pressure of an early exit from the FIFA Club World Cup, a tournament that was expected to boost Botafogo’s status, made Paiva a “scapegoat”.
