On the last afternoon before the end of the course, Pham Thi Thuy Duong ( Hai Phong City) sat down and carefully wrote a handwritten letter to her parents. Her handwriting was neat and hesitant at first, then gradually became decisive. “Here there is no phone, no TV, and no parents around, but thanks to the help of the soldiers and the coordinators, we feel more confident and can be independent in the military environment” - Duong shared as she folded the letter with her strong hands after a week of training in the military environment.
As for Bui Minh Duc (Dong Trieu City), the first days of the program were a series of strange emotions, even a little scared. But now, the 9th grader can fully implement the daily routine, operate the team command and cannot hide his pride: "I learned a lot and am very proud of the tradition of the Vietnamese army. I have trained patience, independence and especially social skills".
These feelings are the result of a serious and systematic training process within the framework of the "Semester in the Army" program organized by the Provincial Military Command in coordination with the Provincial Youth Union at Regiment 244. It is known that in 2025, the program will be implemented with 3 courses, each course lasting 7 days, with a scale of 100 students/course, with the target being youth and teenagers aged 11-17 in Quang Ninh and some neighboring provinces and cities.
The program content is divided into 30% national defenseeducation , 10% traditional education, 40% life skills and 20% extracurricular activities. Students are introduced to the disassembly and assembly of AK submachine guns, learn martial arts exercises, practice basic movement postures, practice team command, and conduct squad activities in accordance with military style. Practical activities such as hanging hammocks, folding internal affairs, reviewing the team, or saluting the flag at the beginning of the week have helped students gradually absorb the spirit of discipline and order.
Not only that, students also learn practical life skills such as time management, teamwork, handling difficult situations, and escape skills in simulated fire environments. Topics such as “Citizens in the 4.0 era”, “The value of family affection” or “How to make dreams come true” help students orient their behavior and improve their social skills.
Major Nguyen Van Loc, Assistant to the Mass Mobilization Department, Political Department, Provincial Military Command, said: To effectively implement the program, preparations were made carefully from very early on. In April, the Provincial Military Command coordinated with the Provincial Youth Union to conduct a survey at Regiment 244, develop a plan and direct the host unit to fully prepare facilities, equipment, training grounds, accommodation and living conditions. Regiment 244 is responsible for building a classroom management framework from squad to company level; assigning commanding officers to directly train, monitor, supervise and support students. The Provincial Youth Union assigned coordinators, skills officers, coordinated the organization of non-military experience content, and linked with specialized units to deploy training in life skills and fire safety skills.
“We do not stop at creating new experiences for students, but consider this a model of responsibility and life skills education. Therefore, many students were initially shy and dependent, but after just a few days, they changed significantly, became independent, lived responsibly, had a sense of discipline and cared more about others” - Major Loc emphasized.
After each course, students receive certificates, badges and rewards for good performance. But more than anything, there is a change in perception and behavior. They have learned how to listen, share, train themselves and live with goals. Saying goodbye to the barracks, each student carries with them a new luggage, not only memories of a special summer, but also the foundation for a long and solid journey of maturity.
