Previously, on May 30, four informed sources said that China confirmed that it would not attend this event.

China declined the invitation because its conditions for participation were not met, three sources said.

Speaking to reporters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that China's decision shows that Beijing understands that holding such an event without Russia's participation would be useless.

Meanwhile, Moscow has not been invited to attend the conference in Switzerland.

On May 31, China's Foreign Ministry said that its request for an international peace conference, accepted by both Russia and Ukraine, is "fair" and "impartial" and is not aimed at any side.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning made the remarks at a press conference after Reuters reported that China would not attend a peace conference for Ukraine hosted by Switzerland next month.

"China attaches great importance to Switzerland hosting the first Ukraine Peace Summit and has been working with the Swiss side and all relevant parties since the beginning of this year," Mao Ning stressed.

On May 30, RIA news agency quoted Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying that China could arrange to hold a peace conference in which Russia and Ukraine would participate.

Foreign Minister Lavrov stressed that this move will continue Beijing's efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis.

Meanwhile, the Swiss government, which is neutral, is seeking broad participation from different countries around the world for the June 15-16 summit. Bern hopes the conference will pave the way for the peace process in Ukraine.
