From the afternoon of June 14 to the early morning of June 15 (Vietnam time), Vietnamese players continued to compete in the knockout rounds. Among them, Tran Quyet Chien faced a real challenge when he faced world No. 6 Heo Jung Han in the round of 16.
Both players started strong, creating long scoring streaks. Tran Quyet Chien led 20-12 at one point but then let Heo Jung Han catch up when the score was only 22-21.
Undaunted, the Vietnamese player had series of 4 points and then 6 points to maintain the gap. At the time when he was behind 40-41, Tran Quyet Chien had two important series of 5 points to win dramatically 50-41 after 21 turns.
He was also the only Vietnamese player to make it through this round. Bao Phuong Vinh lost to Marco Zanetti 33-50, while Tran Thanh Luc was eliminated by Kim Heang Jik with a close score of 48-50.
In the quarterfinals, Tran Quyet Chien faced French player Jeremy Bury. Once again, he was closely followed by his opponent but won 50-35 thanks to long series of points at the decisive moment.
With this victory, Quyet Chien advances straight to the semi-finals and will meet Sameh Sidhom of Egypt. This is a tough player, but he has also lost to Quyet Chien many times in the past.
The remaining semi-final match is between Eddy Merckx and Glen Hofman. With world number 1 Dick Jaspers having stopped, Tran Quyet Chien has the opportunity to win the Ankara Billiards World Cup.
