TQ 519 – New corn variety brings hope to Tan Uyen fields

At the end of June 2025, although the weather in the Northwest region was in the rainy season, the demonstration field of Chinese corn variety 519 on an area of 3,000m2 of Mr. Nguyen Van Tam's family (Phuc Khoa village, Phuc Khoa commune) was still golden yellow with ripe corn. One strange thing is that although the corn was full and round, the corn leaves were still green, the stalks were big and strong as if defying strong winds. The corn cobs were small, so the kernels were large and very productive. People visiting the demonstration model were all surprised because there are very few corn varieties with such good characteristics because not only are corn harvested; the leaves and stalks of corn are also a rich source of food for cattle, buffaloes, and fish.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tam stood in the middle of a corn field full of yellow corn and shared with the people: Chinese corn 519 has a short growing period, hard stems, strong leaves, strong root development and the plant has good lodging resistance; resistant to armyworms, leaf spots, suitable for many types of soil (red soil, upland fields or even on single-crop land), especially grown on intensively cultivated land, the yield is even higher. If intensively cultivated well, the yield can be up to 8 tons/ha or more. The corn kernels are beautiful, the cob is small, the germination rate is 90-95% and the plant grows evenly. These are outstanding features compared to other corn varieties. Indeed, for farmers in Phuc Khoa, this is not just a corn crop, but a new hope for a prosperous life in the midst of rugged mountainous land and erratic climate.

Comrade Lo Van Mon - Deputy Director of the District Agricultural Service Center assessed: TQ 519 is a high-quality hybrid corn variety, selected and crossbred to suit soil and climate conditions in many different ecological regions. This is a domestically produced variety, completely capable of replacing imported corn varieties. Due to its durable green leaves and strong stems, farmers can take advantage of waste products for livestock farming. With initial effectiveness, farmers can confidently use corn varieties in their fields and fields. It is recommended that seed and agricultural material dealers expand the supply of new corn varieties to farmers. This is also a practical activity in response to the campaign "Vietnamese people prioritize using Vietnamese goods".

TQ 519 is a corn variety with durable green leaves and small cobs, which are advantages for the cultivation industry.

It is known that the Chinese corn variety 519 was issued a decision to recognize the circulation of plant varieties by the Department of Crop Production ( Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ) from March 2023. According to Mr. Pham Van Tu - Deputy Director of Thuan Phat Agricultural Services Co., Ltd. - the supplier of Chinese corn variety 519, said: Since the corn variety was allowed to circulate on the Vietnamese seed market, our company has deployed it in many provinces with similar terrain and weather conditions in the Northwest region such as: Yen Bai, Son La, Hoa Binh, Ha Giang ... and found that this is a suitable crop that can be planted in Lai Chau province. Therefore, the company chose Phuc Khoa commune, Tan Uyen district as the demonstration site. Fortunately, the results after 3 months of planting showed that the corn variety is very suitable for the soil and climate, opening up opportunities to choose new crop varieties with high yields while helping farmers take advantage of agricultural waste for livestock farming. We hope that there will be many agents supplying agricultural materials to distribute this corn variety so that farmers can access it and plant it in their fields.

Not only stopping at the productivity figure, what many people are satisfied with is the ability to flexibly adapt to climate change. Besides, if the hybrid corn variety TQ 519 is put into mass cultivation in the district, it will have a greater meaning, which is not only helping farmers access high-quality domestic varieties, reducing dependence on imported varieties, but also contributing to affirming the brand of Vietnamese plant varieties in the agricultural market.

The company gives corn seeds to people for trial planting and plans to expand the scale of planting.

Regarding corn seed distribution, the company has mainly supplied seeds from foreign countries such as CP 511, Syngenta... Today, I have directly witnessed the effectiveness of this corn variety in Tan Uyen land. In the near future, I will choose TQ 519 to replace the current corn seed market. Thereby, helping people support plant varieties produced by Vietnamese people.

TQ 519 – may still be a new name to many regions, but for the people of Phuc Khoa, it is a name that is bringing about abundant harvests. And more than that, it is the belief in the homeland, in what the Vietnamese themselves make – so that corn, from the source of identity, continues to grow in the tea land.
