On July 3, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health held a meeting with leading experts on capacity building for the Medical Center in Con Dao Special Zone, chaired by Associate Professor Tang Chi Thuong - Director of the Department.
According to authorities, the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center not only serves the people living on the island but also receives tens of thousands of tourists and staff every year.
In recent years, the Center has been newly built and invested in quite modern equipment, however the biggest difficulty is still the source of specialized human resources.
Emergency care, childbirth, dialysis, and sea accidents - which are very common on the island - are a long-standing concern not only for the locals but also for tourists and investors here.
During the meeting, leaders of the Department of Health and leading experts agreed on many important contents to proactively improve medical capacity in Con Dao.
Accordingly, the Ho Chi Minh City health sector has determined to implement the improvement of Con Dao's medical capacity in 2 phases.
In Phase 1 (to be implemented in the third quarter), Ho Chi Minh City will rotate skilled doctors to the island according to each specialty, including Obstetrics, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics; organize remote consultations, and provide online continuing education (CME) for medical staff of the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center.
During this period, Ho Chi Minh City will prioritize the development of safe and on-site obstetrics with a full obstetrics, anesthesia, resuscitation and neonatal resuscitation team, reducing dependence on costly and risky transfers by ship and helicopter.
Next, strengthen the capacity of trauma, internal medicine and pediatric emergency care to meet common medical care needs in Con Dao, such as marine accidents, tourist accidents, emergency needs for children and the elderly.
In addition, building an on-site blood bank to ensure safe emergency care in obstetrics, surgery and critical situations is also a priority.

Phase 2 is the development of a project with specific policies, with the goal of forming a general hospital with an appropriate scale right in Con Dao; strengthening links and professional support with major hospitals.
In particular, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health will coordinate with local medical universities to develop a residency training program with rotations to practice at medical facilities in Con Dao.
This is an opportunity to provide training and experience in a special environment for resident doctors and propose policies to retain and attract medical personnel to work in Con Dao.
It is expected that the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health will organize a field survey in Con Dao with the participation of leading experts, to assess the reality and develop a suitable, feasible and sustainable implementation plan.
On the occasion of National Day, September 2, Ho Chi Minh City will organize a rotation of the city's specialist doctors to work at the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center for the first time.
"This is not only a professional activity, but also a strong message that the city's healthcare system after the merger will not only expand geographically but also in service spirit, bringing quality treatment to even the most remote islands," affirmed the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health.
