'Social work in the health sector is a deeply humane field'

Practice over the past 15 years has proven that, from a spontaneous beginning, now 100% of central hospitals and more than 90% of provincial and regional hospitals have social work departments/teams, with nearly 10,000 staff.

Social work in healthcare is not just about charitable acts or immediate financial support, it is also a profession and a profession with profound humanity, contributing to the completion of the comprehensive picture of the modern healthcare system.

Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan emphasized this when speaking at the first Congress to establish the Vietnam Association of Social Workers in the health sector, term 2025-2030, which took place on the afternoon of August 25.

The establishment of the Social Work Association is an important milestone in the development of social work in the health sector in Vietnam.

The past 15 years have proven that, from a spontaneous beginning, now 100% of central hospitals and more than 90% of provincial and regional hospitals have social work departments/teams, with nearly 10,000 officers and employees.

"If treatment and prevention medicine cares for the physical body, then social work is the source of compassion that nourishes the spirit, the bridge connecting the heart-mind-community. It is social work that helps patients and their families not to be alone in the journey of fighting the disease, but to share, accompany, and gain strength to overcome difficulties," Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan pointed out.

The Deputy Minister of Health affirmed that the Congress to establish the Vietnam Association of Social Workers in the health sector marked the maturity and convergence of a particularly humane force in the health sector.

The Association will become a common home connecting thousands of social workers and staff across the country, the silent yet persistent people who are sowing seeds of kindness in hospital corridors, in patient rooms, and in the hearts of patients.

At the Congress, Associate Professor Nguyen Tuan Hung - Former Deputy Director of the Department of Organization and Personnel (Ministry of Health), was elected to hold the position of President of the Vietnam Association of Social Workers in the Health Sector.

Vietnam Medical Social Work Association is a social-professional organization operating in the medical field, voluntarily established in accordance with the law, not for profit.

The purpose of the Association is to gather, unite, protect the legitimate rights and interests of members, support, share experiences, develop the profession of social work in healthcare, improve the quality and effectiveness of medical examination, treatment and disease prevention for people, contributing to the socio -economic development of the country.

This is a place to connect, support, improve professional capacity, and closely cooperate with medical staff to improve the quality of medical examination, treatment and comprehensive health care for the people./.
