Ho Chi Minh City studies design of international-class symphony, music and ballet theater on Saigon River

The content is stated in the directive document of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee on the architectural design plan of the project to build a symphony, music and ballet theater in the new urban area of ​​Thu Thiem.

Accordingly, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Phan Van Mai assigned the Department of Culture and Sports to preside over and coordinate with the Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Civil and Industrial Works and relevant departments and branches to urgently supplement and complete the optimal architectural design plan for the project.

At the same time, units need to determine a suitable and appropriate name for the theater and urgently prepare conditions for project implementation to ensure strict legality, correct procedures, regulations and quality and efficiency requirements.

In particular, the departments and branches should continue to research, carefully analyze, and specifically evaluate the theater's architectural design ideas, functionality, artistic value, synchronization, harmony, and suitability with the landscape, aesthetics, and urban architectural space.

The design plan must ensure the architecture of a modern, multifunctional theater, with many types of performing arts such as opera, symphony, ballet, reformed opera, seminars, exchanges, tourism ...

The stage for performances must meet the requirements of the most modern stage in the world , demonstrate the unique value of performing arts, and form the cultural heritage of Ho Chi Minh City.

The architectural design plan must also ensure unique design criteria, aesthetic harmony, create highlights in cultural, modern, scientific architectural design, harmonize traditional values, and combine to build "Ho Chi Minh Cultural Space".

The Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee also requested that during the preparation process, units need to carefully research, consult, listen, and absorb the maximum opinions of experts and study famous theaters of other countries.

The commencement and implementation of project items must ensure progress according to the plan. At the same time, units can study and call for social investment in some items to build a theater commensurate with the stature of the city.

Total investment of the theater is nearly 2,000 billion VND

The project to build a symphony, music and ballet theater was approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council in 2018 with a total investment of VND 1,508 billion from the budget, to be implemented in the period 2018 - 2022.

The theater has 1,700 seats, including a large auditorium with 1,200 seats and a small auditorium with 500 seats.

In May 2021, the City's Civil and Industrial Construction Investment Project Management Board proposed to the City People's Committee to increase the total project investment to VND 1,988 billion and adjust the project implementation period in the 2018-2024 period.

In 2022, the project had to be temporarily suspended due to the need to prioritize the budget for social security activities and economic recovery. At that time, the project had not yet been approved, nor had the contractor selection plan been approved.

Currently, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has assigned the Department of Culture and Sports to prepare a pre-feasibility study report to adjust the project to implement the next steps.
