In order to enhance pedestrian safety when crossing the street, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction is planning to expand the pilot installation of warning lights under the sidewalk surface at some locations on central roads such as Le Loi and Pasteur - areas with high traffic density. This is the next step after this model was tested in the Ton Duc Thang area and initially recorded positive results.

Previously, since the end of May, the first warning light system has been deployed at the pedestrian crossing in front of 18 Ton Duc Thang Street (Ben Nghe Ward, District 1). The device includes two-color LED clusters (blue - red) embedded under the sidewalk surface, synchronously connected to the traffic light system on the pole. This solution helps increase the ability to recognize signals and accurately orient pedestrians when crossing the street.

According to the representative of the Department of Construction, the model is especially effective in situations where visibility is limited, such as heavy rain, pedestrians are obscured by vehicles, or the elderly or people with poor eyesight cannot see traffic lights from a distance. The ground lights shine clearly, creating a high visual effect, helping pedestrians determine the correct location and safe time to cross the street.

After nearly a month of monitoring the situation, the department assessed that the model has brought positive results, helping to increase initiative, define stopping locations and improve safety for pedestrians. From these results, Ho Chi Minh City is considering implementing it at 2-3 other locations on Le Loi and Pasteur streets to continue summarizing and evaluating before replicating the model throughout the area.

In addition to sidewalk lights, Ho Chi Minh City has also implemented many solutions to ensure pedestrian safety such as raising the road surface at intersections, painting red and white reflective paint to increase visibility, and adding warning signs and traffic instructions.

However, in reality, observing traffic signals for pedestrians is still difficult, especially during rush hour or when large vehicles block the view. The new model is expected to significantly overcome these limitations, while improving the quality of infrastructure serving pedestrians in large cities such as Ho Chi Minh City.
