Speaking in Port Sudan, Mr Burhan said: "We will not go to Geneva. We will fight for 100 years."

While RSF sent a delegation to attend, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) refused to participate, only communicating with the mediators by phone. The SAF expressed dissatisfaction with the format of the negotiations.

The peace talks, initiated by the US on August 14, were held behind closed doors in Switzerland. The talks were co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and Switzerland. The African Union (AU), Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the United Nations (UN) acted as a steering group.

Although the talks ended on August 23 without a ceasefire, progress was made in securing aid access on two main routes into Sudan.

The conflict between government forces and RSF broke out in April 2023, forcing about 20% of Sudan's population to flee their homes and killing tens of thousands. More than 25 million people, more than 50% of the population, are facing severe famine.
