International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said on September 2 that he was on his way to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) to continue efforts to prevent a potential nuclear disaster.

Last week, the IAEA Director General visited Russia's Kursk Nuclear Power Plant at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin amid ongoing fighting in Kursk province and assessed the situation at the facility as critical.

After the visit, Mr. Grossi declared that any attack on any nuclear power plant was unacceptable.

In a related development, according to a video posted on social media by the Office of the President of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that after the IAEA Director General visited ZNPP, the two leaders would meet in Kiev.

Mr. Zelensky admitted that at the current stage of the military conflict with Moscow, Kiev cannot regain control of the ZNPP, although he said that “Ukraine would be safer” if it controlled the nuclear facility.

Located on the left bank of the Dnipro River, ZNPP is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant. The facility came under Russian control in early 2022 and has since been repeatedly shelled, raising safety concerns. IAEA experts have been monitoring the situation at ZNPP since the fall of 2022.
