Ukrainian President speaks out about the "fate" of the agreement to transit Russian gas to Europe

On August 27, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Kiev has no plans to extend the gas transit agreement with Moscow. This agreement expires at the end of 2024.

At a press conference with Ukrainian television channels, President Zelensky affirmed: “There will be no extension of the agreement with Russia on the transit of its gas to Europe. The issue has been decided.”

Earlier in March, Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko confirmed the Eastern European country's stance: "Kiev has no plans to extend the agreement on Moscow's gas transit to Europe after 2024."

In December 2019, Moscow and Kiev signed a five-year agreement on the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine: 45 billion cubic meters in 2020 and 40 billion cubic meters per year in 2021-2024.

In 2021, Kiev received about $1 billion (€0.92 billion) in gas transit fees from Moscow.

Due to lower deliveries to Europe since Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine (February 2022), profits have dropped to around $700 million per year.

Efforts to reduce energy dependence on Russia have become one of the European Union's (EU) top priorities following the outbreak of conflict in Ukraine.

The 27-nation bloc has decided to reduce or stop fuel imports from the Kremlin.
