"We will pursue constructive interaction with the world based on dignity, intelligence and wisdom," Mr. Pezeshkian stressed. His victory raised hopes of improving Iran's relations with the West and easing nuclear tensions.

However, he took office amid escalating tensions in the Middle East with conflict between Israel and Hamas, and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Iran accused the US of supporting Israel's actions in Gaza.

At his inauguration, Pezeshkian criticized: "Those who provide weapons that kill children cannot teach Muslims about humanity."

Mr Pezeshkian is expected to announce a cabinet in two weeks, replacing hardline leader Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May.

As supreme leader, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has final say on all national issues, including foreign and nuclear policy. He will also approve Pezeshkian's picks for key cabinet positions such as foreign , oil and intelligence ministers.

Mr Pezeshkian faces Western pressure over Iran’s nuclear programme and a quest to lift US sanctions. Indirect talks with Washington have stalled since 2022.

"My government will never succumb to bullying and pressure... and the Iranian people should be respected," he declared.
