On February 26, the Bulgarian Constitutional Court ordered the country's Central Election Commission (CEC) to recount votes in the parliamentary election held on October 27, 2024.

The decision comes after a court investigation, which began in early November 2024, into allegations of election fraud.

According to the Constitutional Court, the investigation results found that 46.75% of the votes at 1,768 polling stations out of a total of 12,920 nationwide had irregularities, such as not matching the number of votes allocated to the candidate list and a number of other inconsistencies.

Due to these violations, the court ordered the CEC to determine the total number of votes cast, reassess which parties and coalitions passed the minimum 4% threshold to enter parliament, and verify the allocation of seats.

The court also asked to consider whether the recount would change the composition of Congress.

According to the final results announced by the CEC on October 30, 2024, there are 8 parties and coalitions with seats in parliament, while the Greatness Party missed the 4% threshold, falling short by just 21 votes.

On January 16, the Bulgarian Parliament approved the coalition government headed by Mr. Rosen Zhelyazkov, nominated by the GERB-UDF party, with the support of 125/240 members of parliament.

Bulgaria held early parliamentary elections on October 27, 2024. This is the seventh parliamentary election in the past four years in Bulgaria amid a prolonged political deadlock that has slowed down the economic reform process in this European Union (EU) member state./.
