Mexico's electoral court approves first female president

The Mexican Federal Electoral Court (TEPJF) has approved the legitimacy of the general election that took place on June 2. Accordingly, candidate Claudia Sheinbaum won legally, officially becoming the first elected female president in the history of Mexico and the North American region.

TEPJF stated that candidate Claudia Sheinbaum, representing the Sigamos Haciendo Historia (We Continue to Make History) electoral coalition, won the election after gaining 35,924,519 votes, accounting for 59.76% of the total votes, thereby gaining the legal status to officially become President of Mexico.

In a statement on the same day, August 14, TEPJF said that after a thorough review and inspection of the procedures related to the general election with the participation of an international observer group, the agency declared that the general election was conducted legally, democratically and in compliance with the provisions of the Mexican Constitution.

According to Mexican electoral law, Claudia Sheinbaum will only be officially recognized as the winner of the presidential election after receiving the above approval from TEPJF, according to Sintesis. According to the plan, Claudia Sheinbaum will assume the presidency from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2030.

Previously, the official vote count results announced by the National Electoral Institute (INE) on June 6 showed that with 59.7% of the votes, Ms. Claudia Sheinbaum far surpassed the two remaining opponents, Ms. Xóchitl Gálvez - representing the Fuerza y Corazón por México (Strength and Heart for Mexico) election coalition and Mr. Jorge Álvarez Máynez - representing the Movimiento Ciudadano (People's Movement) coalition with 27.4% and 10.4% of the votes, respectively.

In addition, also according to INE, with a gap of 32.3 percentage points compared to her closest rival, candidate Xóchitl Gálvez, Ms. Claudia Sheinbaum also became the elected president who received the most votes in Mexican history.

Ms. Sheinbaum, born in 1962, is a close ally of President Lopez Obrador. An environmental scientist by training, Ms. Sheinbaum worked at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Before running for office, Ms. Sheinbaum served as mayor of Mexico City from 2018 to 2023.
