Initially, the Vatican only canceled Pope Francis' schedule to attend events until today (February 17) after the Pope was hospitalized since February 14 to treat bronchitis.

However, according to the latest test results, the general audience on February 19 cannot be held due to the complicated health situation of the universal church leader, according to AFP.

"The results of tests carried out in the past few days and today showed that (the pope) has a respiratory infection, which led to a change in treatment," the Vatican announced.

"All tests to date indicate a complex clinical picture, which will require hospitalization for a corresponding period of time," according to the Vatican.

AFP quoted a Vatican source as saying that Pope Francis had to use oxygen.

Earlier, another source insisted that there was nothing to be alarmed about following the Pope's hospitalization on February 14. However, the source said that he had to be hospitalized after two busy weeks of work that had weakened his health.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni updated information on February 17 that the pope still maintains his usual sense of humor.

The Pope began having difficulty breathing and was diagnosed with bronchitis on February 6. However, he continued his daily work and presided over Sunday Mass (February 9). On February 12, the Pope was unable to read his speech and had to have an assistant read it for him during the general audience.

On February 14, the Pope appeared pale and edematous, due to fluid retention caused by bronchitis medication. And when he was admitted to the hospital, doctors diagnosed him with a respiratory infection and required inpatient treatment.
