Self-check knowledge and skills system

Teacher Trinh Thu Tuyet believes that, at this point, first of all, students should review their knowledge and skills to be able to respond to each type of question according to the structure and format of the sample test of the Ministry of Education and Training (February 16, 2025) with two parts: Reading Comprehension/Writing with paragraph writing (Social Essay or Literary Essay) and essay writing (Social Essay or Literary Essay).

When the Reading comprehension material as well as the discussion content in the Writing section may be related to one of three types of texts: literature, argumentation, information, students need to review all the basic genre knowledge, which can meet the requirements of the Reading comprehension questions or the discussion, analysis requirements... in the Writing section.

The basic genre knowledge that needs to be noted in narrative is the narrator, point of view, etc.; in lyric poetry is the lyrical character, poetic form, poetic image, etc.; in argumentative writing is the thesis, points of view, supporting elements such as explanation, description, etc.; argumentative operations such as proof, comment, refutation, etc.; in informational text is the sapos, non-verbal means, data, and information arrangement.

When the Reading Comprehension section will have at least 1 question about Vietnamese and the literary essay section also has a language text as the subject, Vietnamese knowledge is an important content in students' luggage, for example, how to interpret words, especially Sino-Vietnamese words; rhetorical devices such as comparison, personification, metaphor, metonymy, contrast, repetition, irony, paradox, listing...; measures to increase negation, affirmation...

To meet the requirements of the Social Essay section, students also need to update their social knowledge, especially the hot issues of the times such as artificial intelligence, mob syndrome, school violence, environmental protection, traffic safety, etc., putting those issues in the perspective of youth.

Skills needed for exams

The first part of the test is the Reading Comprehension section , which includes a reading material outside the textbook and 5 reading comprehension questions arranged according to three cognitive levels: recognition, understanding, and application. Students need to recognize the signs of each type of question to have an appropriate answer method, avoiding giving redundant or incomplete answers.

Application questions often require expressing emotions, thoughts and especially personal opinions on a statement/message/issue raised in a reading text. With questions requiring expressing emotions and thoughts about a phenomenon, event, etc., students need to answer briefly, sincerely, honestly about their personal thoughts and feelings, avoiding stereotypes, shouting slogans, etc.

With the question type “Do you agree…?/Why”, students need to correctly identify their thoughts and perceptions to discuss thoroughly and closely. It is completely possible to agree or disagree, the most important thing is to answer the question “Why?” with a tight, honest and convincing argument.

When writing a social argumentative paragraph, you need to pay special attention to two requirements regarding the content and form of the paragraph: Regarding the content, only discuss one aspect, one plane of the problem (cause/ or meaning/ or consequence/ or solution...), absolutely do not turn the paragraph into a miniature essay with all aspects of the problem; regarding the form, you need to write the correct paragraph structure and the correct capacity according to the requirements of the topic.

The essay writing question may require the presentation of feelings or analysis of a certain value about the content or art of the text. When writing, candidates need to remember: the value of the content is always expressed through the characteristics of the artistic form; artistic value is the ability to deeply and subtly express the content, so even if the argument in the paragraph is only a specific value,

With social argumentative essays , you need to correctly identify the argumentative issue according to the requirements of the topic, develop a coherent and logical system of arguments with tight reasoning and convincing evidence. You can develop according to the following main ideas: Explain concepts and ideas; Discuss with contents such as manifestations, causes, evaluations, solutions, etc.

In addition, students need to expand on the issue, discuss opposing views or other opinions.

For a literary essay, the introduction can provide a general introduction to the author (position, artistic style), the work (origin, value) and the discussion topic (according to the requirements of the command in the topic); the body can provide an overview of the role and position of the character/excerpt in the general theme or main inspiration of the entire work; then focus on the content of the perception/analysis... of the character/excerpt...according to the requirements of the topic.

It is important to pay attention to the development of a suitable system of ideas towards the general discussion issue; the analysis and perception process must closely follow the characteristics of the genre; and as with the paragraph, it is necessary to analyze the content value through the artistic features that convey the content. Analyze the artistic value through the role of expressing the content deeply and subtly. The conclusion can affirm the content/artistic value just analyzed, affirm the talent and contribution of the author, the work to literature and human life.

Ms. Trinh Thu Tuyet emphasized that with the Writing section, whether it is a paragraph or an essay, a social argument or a literary argument, the first important thing is to correctly identify the argument requirements; then students should briefly outline the direction of the argument content so that the writing process is not rambling or sketchy, lacking ideas. If the Social Argument section requires a sharp, confident, and honest expression of self, the Literary Argument section requires the ability to perceive delicately, analyze deeply, and express sincere feelings.
