Promoting sustainable development of cement industry

Báo Công thươngBáo Công thương13/11/2024

The requirements for green production, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and moving towards sustainable development also pose challenges to the cement industry.

Cement production is considered one of the industries with high emission rates, accounting for 75% of emissions in the construction materials sector. In 2024, the real estate market remained sluggish. Along with that, high production costs and requirements in sustainable development have significantly affected the consumption of products and business of the cement and concrete industry.

According to Dr. Tran Ba Viet - Vice President of Vietnam Concrete Association, Vietnam produces and consumes about 140 million m3 of concrete and 60 million tons of cement each year. In the future, domestic demand will be 100 million tons of cement/year, with a corresponding volume of concrete of about 250 million m3/year.

Although it is considered an industry with great potential for development, according to Mr. Viet, the cement and concrete industry is currently facing many difficulties and challenges due to the frozen real estate market and the decline in public investment, causing domestic consumption to slow down. In addition, the requirements for green production, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and moving towards sustainable development also pose challenges to this industry.

To support cement industry enterprises in accessing technology and applying it to production, from November 13-14, 2024, Fireworks Trade Media in collaboration with the Vietnam Association of Building Materials (VABM), the Vietnam Concrete Association (VCA), the Vietnam Cement Association (VNCA) organized the Vietnam Cement and Concrete Machinery, Equipment and Technology Exhibition 2024 in Hanoi. The exhibition brings together nearly 100 suppliers bringing advanced machinery and equipment from leading countries in the world such as China, Germany, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc.

According to the Organizing Committee, the program is an opportunity for businesses to directly access advanced technological solutions to optimize the supply chain, minimize operational risks and improve accuracy in the construction process. At the same time, the application of new equipment and machinery not only helps save energy, reduce CO2 emissions but also meets increasingly stringent environmental protection standards, contributing positively to the trend of using green building materials and moving towards a sustainable, environmentally friendly industry.

Within the framework of the exhibition, many international conferences on cement and concrete were held to discuss in-depth trends and challenges of the industry. Key topics include: industry overview and emission reduction challenges, application of cement concrete in bridge and road construction in weak and saline soil areas, exploring 4.0 technology, IIoT and smart digitalization through AI-ML as well as evaluating the technical and economic efficiency of advanced viaduct solutions... all of which will help businesses solve current difficulties. At the same time, open up new directions for the strong development of the cement concrete industry.
